Athletics   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
Athletics was the original sport at the first Olympics back in 776 BC where the only event held was the stadium-length foot race or "stade".
Women generally run the same distances as men although hurdles and steeplechase barriers are lower and the weights of the shot, discus, javelin and hammer are less.
Note : Two record distances are given for the men's javelin event ; this is because in the 1980s, the men's event was throwing at distances which caused many "flat landings" and judges at the event were having trouble discerning the exact point at which the javelin had landed and whether the throw was legal.

In a number of sports, such as athletics or swimming world records are set in a number of events that is regularly competed in over the world.
In order for a record to be recognised, the event has to be held according to specific rules, and the athlete(s) in question usually have to be subject to a doping test.
Not all events have world records, as the achievements in some events are too dependent on the layout of the course or venue, which are not bounded by rules.

 100 m Sprint Prediction
Montgomery has become world record holder by improving the mark by barely 1 part in 1000 - and you have to wonder whether the dimensions of the track and measurement of atheletes performance is really that accurate (particularly when the effect of wind swirls etc.,.
As the analysis on the Comparison of 100 m Sprinting page suggests, the limit is very near and might have been reached.
Records that split this difference (by measuring to better than 0.1 sec resolution) could simply be measuring the varying contribution of wind.

 Will Women Soon Outrun Men?
In this paper, Whipp and Ward graph the progression of world record track times (specifically, the mean running velocity in meters/minute) for men and women from early this century up to 1992 for the 200, 400, 800, 1500, 5000 and 10000 meter events and the marathon.
Given that mean speed differences between the 100 m and 200 m events are mostly due to the relatively greater importance of the first few strides in the former event, this means that past this date the fastest humans will be women marathoners as even women sprinters will have lower mean speeds.
Taking the current (March, 1998) world records for these events from Petri Niininen's Athletics Home Page, we find that the best men's marathon time is 2:06:50 (April '88) and the best women's marathon time is 2:21:06 (April '85).
