Debate is a common process in deliberative bodies such as parliaments, legislative assemblies, and meetings of all sorts.
High school debate events such as Student Congress, Model United Nations, European Youth Parliament, Junior State of America and the American Legion's Boys State and Girls State events are activities which are based on the premise of the contestants acting as representatives in a mock legislative body.

Two of the rounds are parliamentary debate, two are cross-examination or discussion style debate and two are impromptu debate in academic, parliamentary, discussion or cross-examination style.
It differs from the World Schools Debating Championships in that it concentrates on the individual rather than on national team, and that it involves public speaking as well as debating.
Half of the Canadian team for the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships are selected at this event, based on the sum of their scores in their three events and subject to the condition that no more than one student per school may be chosen.

The Telkom World Schools Debating Championships, held in Johannesburg from 29th January to 6th February, was a resounding success for all participants, thanks to the exceptionally committed team of South African students who organised the tournament.
A packed 9 days of debating, social and cultural events saw participants visit the Soweto townships, game reserves and schools throughout Johannesburg, and be treated to lectures and performances by major human rights campaigners, high school choirs and professional dance troupes.
Although the Championship President, Nelson Mandela, was forced to miss the Final due to peace talks in Burundi, his support and the friendly welcome of the South African people were felt everywhere.

Anna, who wants to study Modern Languages at university, has recently been involved in the final of the University Schools' Debating Competition in Dundee and her debating achievements include winning competitions at the universities of Bristol, Dundee and Durham last year.
Former Scottish team debaters from the School include George Williamson (1991), Melanie Marshall (1998), Jack Anderson (2000 and 2001) and George Molyneaux (2002 and 2003).
A good debater needs to have a hunger and curiosity for knowledge, be able to listen to an argument, think on their feet, spot flaws and argue back logically.

Grade 12’s are not eligible because this tournament selects those who will try out for the Worlds team, and only grade 10 or 11 students are allowed on that team because the next World’s are in 2005.
The top 2 debaters, provided that they are from different schools, will be eligible to compete for a spot on the Canadian team going the World Schools Debating Championships.
The 2 students selected will need to submit resumes of their debating experience and will also need to be able to attend the National selection tournament in Winnipeg on Saturday, April 24, and Sunday, April 25.

The South African National Debating Council was formed in 1996 by Stellenbosch University, as a prelude to their hosting of the World Universities Debating Championships.
In 2002, the South African National Debating Council unanimously agreed to permanently delegate its involvement in schools debating to the South African Schools Debating Board.
Its primary objective is to co-ordinate, develop and further schools debating in South Africa.

The first World Schools Debating Championships were held in Australia in 1988, the same year that Calgary hosted the world at the ’88 Winter Olympics.

A weekend in which a few debates got in the way of some proper activities, including 250 international participants descending on a hockey match (yes, there was blood on the ice), a trip to Calgary's Olympic Park for skiing and snowboarding, and a day at a First Nations reservation.
We'd hoped to get some debaters to write entries on this blog but I imagine the last day of preliminary debates might be mildly distracting.
This is going to be an easy way to post news from the WSDC in Calgary, Canada in February 2005.

At the National Championships, the four best debaters are chosen to represent at the World Schools Debating Championships, usually held in January each year.
They debated against USA in the Octo-finals, and lost a closely fought debate 2-1.
The Championships were won by Australia for the third time in a row, beating England, 5-0 in the final.

An unofficial annual men’s world championship event began in 1959; it was sponsored by the Scotch Whisky Association.
In 2002 it established world senior (fifty years of age or older) championships for men and for women and a world wheelchair curlers’ championship (wheelchair curlers use a stick to push the stone).
These world championship events are, of course, preceded by national championship events in the individual countries.

 Team Canada at 2001 World Debating Championships
The team consisted of Edward Rawlinson (Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School in Okotoks, Alberta), Nina Singh (Archbishop Macdonald High School in Edmonton, Alberta), Elliot Tapper (St. John's-Ravenscourt School in Winnipeg, Manitoba), Tony Navaneelan (Ashbury College in Ottawa, Ontario) and Rory Gillis (Sydney Academy in Sydney, Nova Scotia), and coached by Rupert Ray (St. Andrew's College in Aurora, Ontario).
These were schools which were in the forefront of the struggle against the government's Apartheid policies and who had experienced brutal suppression from the police not many years before.
The nine day championship was superbly organized by a 30 member team of university students from the debating unions of four of South Africa's main universities headed up by Stephen Budlender, Nick Ferreira, Belinda Flynn and Simone Horowitz.

The debaters compete in coordinate teams (They are teamed with a partner from another province and change partners every 2 rounds) thus there are no team results.
Among the debaters are some of the brightest students in the world.
At the Debate Provincials, on March 19, Ron and his Committee were presented with the John Baty Award by the ADSA for their effort in hosting the 2005 Worlds.
