About That Free Trade . . . - New York Times
Global talks to liberalize farm and industrial trade are on life support, and there is not a single character in the cast of supposed free-trade advocates around the world willing to step up and be the doctor.
All of that was supposed to change after 2001, when, reeling from the Sept. 11 attack and under intense pressure from the developing world, America, Europe and Japan agreed to slash agricultural subsidies while further liberalizing world trade in services and manufactured goods.
World trade talks are notorious for coming back to life after being declared dead.

News & Broadcast - Global Trade Finance Program
Regional trade agreements offer some benefits to some developing countries but, on balance, a multilateral trade agreement that reduces protection, especially in areas where the poor have a competitive edge, promises greater potential gains to all developing countries.
Rich countries account for two-thirds of world trade and comprise nearly three-quarters of world GDP, so their domestic policies—most evident in agriculture—have the greatest effect on the global marketplace.
Also, the majority of the world’s poor do not live in the poorest countries, so trade preferences targeted at these countries do not benefit the three-quarters of the world’s extremely poor who live in other countries.

Although foreign investment will play a leading role in China's continuing economic expansion, the biggest winners from its growth will not be the likes of Motorola or Coca-Cola but local businesses, such as the Hope Group, the pig swill merchants whose owners have emerged as the country's first dollar billionaires.
While the rest of the world fears impending recession, China's new tycoons are so far untroubled by warnings of global doom.
