Population history of American indigenous peoples - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Henige does not advocate a "low" population estimate; rather, he argues that the scanty and unreliable nature of the evidence renders broad estimates suspect, and that "high counters" (as he calls them) have been particularly flagrant in their misuse of sources.
The extent and causes of this population decline have long been the subject of controversy and debate, which became particularly widespread in 1992 during the 500th anniversary of Columbus's famous voyage, with a number of people claiming that the natives of the Americas have been the victims of genocide.
Population decline was not only the result of increased death rates—decreased birth rates resulting from oppression and disruption of ways-of-life also had an impact.

 Current Population Survey - Title
DESCRIPTION: The Current Population Survey (CPS) is a household sample survey conducted monthly by the Census Bureau to provide estimates of employment, unemployment, and other characteristics of the general labor force, estimates of the population as a whole, and estimates of various subgroups in the population.
Each March, in addition to the core of information mentioned above, the Current Population Survey: Annual Demographic Files provide detailed demographic data representative of the non-institutionalized, United States civilian population and male members of the Armed Services living in civilian housing.
When CPS switched from the 1973 SMSA definitions (based on the 1970 census) to the 1984 MSA definitions (based on the 1980 census and not including commuting results), current resident codes were switched but not previous residence codes, explaining why the problem began in 1986, the first year with the new definitions.

SGN 2000: A Preliminary Genetic Linkage Map of Soybean Using an Intraspecific Cross of Two Cultivars: ‘Peking’ and ‘Lee.’
The objective of this paper is to use the response curves published by Weber and Diggins (1990) and estimates of effective population size to calculate selection limits for grain yield for North American soybean breeding, using previously published estimates of genetic gain.
Theoretical and empirical studies of selection limits have provided a way to use estimates of genetic gain and effective population size to calculate the plateau (selection limit) beyond which further gains are impossible.
The estimate of effective population size (St. Martin, 1982) is obsolete and limited in scope, derived from Northern public cultivars released up to 1980, i.e., two or more breeding cycles ago.

Population history of American indigenous peoples - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The most controversial question relating to the population history of American indigenous peoples is whether or not the natives of the Americas were the victims of genocide.
The extent and causes of this population decline have long been the subject of controversy and debate, which became particularly widespread in 1992 during the 500th anniversary of Columbus' famous voyage, with a number of people claiming that the Indians living in the Americas had been the victims of Spanish genocide.
Indigenous populations in most areas of the Americas reached a low point by the early twentieth century, and in a number of cases started to climb again.

In contrast, estimated levels of exposure in the human population may be considerably smaller, often by several orders of magnitude.

Medieval Sourcebook: Tables on Population in Medieval Europe
No complete population censuses were taken until the 18th century, thus estimates of population levels are notoriously unreliable.
Other expansions of the few hard figures we have are frequently done by using actuarial data from modern world societies with population structures like that of medieval Europe, for instance figures derived from Indian population surveys earlier in the 20th century.
Estimated levels vary as a number of "multiplier" factor often have to be taken into account - estimated population density, ages of marriage, and perhaps most importantly the number of people denoted by a "hearth" in those medieval tax surveys that do provide hard numbers.

 Pre-Columbian population
While population estimates for certain specific areas of the Americas can be based on archeological data, such data is insufficent to form credible population estimates for the American continent as a whole, so projections rely in part on conjecture and continue to vary significantly.
The population of the New World prior to contact with Europe in 1492 is the subject of debate in historical and archaeological circles.
The largely empty, supposedly natural continent European settlers of North America saw had actually actually a recent development after the bulk of the indigenous population was killed off by European diseases that traveled well in advance of settlers.
