Snooker world rankings - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rankings were first introduced after the 1976 world championship, as a means of determining seedings for subsequent championships.
Ray Reardon, who had won the championship all three years, thus became the first player to be officially ranked number one in the world, with fifteen ranking points.
The current rankings for the 2005/06 season were compiled from the results of eight tournaments: the totesport Grand Prix, British Open, UK Championship, Welsh Open, Malta Cup, Irish Masters, China Open and World Championship.

FIFA World Rankings - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The FIFA World Rankings were introduced in August 1993 to make it possible to publish comparisons of the relative strengths of internationally active teams at regular intervals.
The rankings obtained are, unsurprisingly, the subject of considerable debate.
They are based on performances over an eight year period, which means that teams with a consistent record are highly ranked, but on the other hand the rankings are fairly slow to respond significantly to changes in form.

The economies are ranked from the most to the least competitive and performance can be analyzed on the basis of time-series.
For example, rankings split by population size, by wealth or by regions (Europe-Middle East-Africa, Asia-Pacific and the Americas).

Reporters sans frontières - Second world press freedom ranking (October 2003)
They are ranked in 31st and 44th positions respectively as regards respect for freedom of expression on their own territory, but they fall to the 135th and 146th positions as regards behaviour beyond their borders.
Kuwait (102nd) replaced Lebanon (106th) as the Arab world’s leader as regards respect for freedom of expression because of cases of censorship in Lebanon, together with abusive judicial proceedings and an attack on the television station Futur TV.
France is ranked as low as 26th because of its archaic defamation legislation, the increasingly frequent challenges to the principle of confidentiality of sources and the repeated abusive detention of journalists by police.

EPAA Vol. 10 No. 16 Clarke: U.S. News and World Report Rankings
While a ranking (e.g., the law rankings) may have experienced a large number of changes relative to other rankings, these changes may be concentrated in a small group of indicators that are constantly being refined.
Different rankings of schools also use different numbers of indicators to compute their overall score, and thus two rankings that experience the same types and number of changes may differ in the number of indicators left unchanged overall.
In contrast, the low (relative to the other rankings) correlation between the 1995 and 2000 ranks of the top-fifty schools of education in 1995 is linked to the fact that 16 of the top 50 schools in 1995 had experienced large changes in rank–of ten or more–by the 2000 edition.

The Validity of the U.S. News and World Report Law School Rankings   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
However, because the US News ranking system inflates small differences in quality among schools, the addition of other factors (and/or slightly changing their weights) could shift a school from the bottom of one broad category of overall quality to the top of another (such as from the second to the third tier).
The US News rankings also do not consider the educational or career benefits of attending a certain school, such as would be indicated by the percentage of its graduates who receive judicial clerkships or land a good job after graduation relative to the general caliber of the students coming into the school and other factors.
Specifically, the use of ranks exaggerates small differences in quality among schools, ranks are overly sensitive to careless error, a handful of respondents can rate strategically so as to give a school a higher (or lower) rating than it deserves, and the persons responding may not be representative of the population of lawyers.

 England's FIFA World Rankings Overview
England sank to their lowest-ever ranking, 27th, in February, 1996 under Taylor's successor, national team coach Terry Venables, as they neared the end of a 30-month period in which they played 20 consecutive friendly matches, including three in the minor Umbro Cup International Challenge Tournament in 1995.
Following their round-of-16 exit from the World Cup 1998 final tournament, their ranking dropped five places, from 5th to 10th, and, after their shaky start in the European Championship 2000 qualifying campaign, to 11th in September of that year.
They were ranked among the top 10 teams for 22 straight months, by far their longest top-10 streak, and appeared well on the way to entrenching themselves once again as one of the world's top-ranked teams and becoming one of the elite top five teams.

 England's FIFA World Rankings 2001
Victories in their next two World Cup qualifiers, 2-1 at home against Finland and 3-1 away to Albania in March, boosted them to 14th for the April ranking, and, although they did not play in April, they remained 14th in the May ranking.
The impressive victories in home friendlies and the narrower wins in World Cup 2002 qualifiers were still balanced in the ranking calculations against several disappointing results from 2000, thus precluding a greater improvement in the rankings.
And they retained that ranking in October after drawing with Greece, 2-2 in Manchester, taking first place in their qualifying group and thereby clinching their spot in the World Cup 2002 final tournament.
