World66 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
World66 was a Dutch company which embraced the open content idea and tried to transform it into a profitable business.
World66 uses wiki-like software based on the Zope application server, which allows everyone to add or edit contents.
In 2004, World66 relicensed all content to an open license first a GNU FDL license and consequently to CC by-sa 1.0 - those who had contributed under GNU FDL license were informed of the change by e-mail and had the possibility to withdraw contributions.

World66 will be awarding ten travel grants to the best trip proposals they get.
It looks like each grant is worth $1,000, although the fine print explains that they have the right to award less than that.
World66 is an open content travel guide, which means that anyone can contribute and/or edit content on the site.

Mike Linksvayer » WikiTravel vs. World66: WikiTravel wins more
World66 content is split into more individual pages, requiring multiple page edits where a single operation suffices for adding the same content to WikiTravel.
At some point a page does get too long, but my preference is for much longer pages than most sites present — less clicking, more effective in-page searching, and less of a pain to print.

I think it can be done, and I think that improvements in our software, and continued growth in the number of contributors, are crucial to making it happen.
Having a good platform for growth, more development time and effort, and a partnership rather than a competition with World66 (which, I agree, is an excellent site), means we're farther along on our way to getting there.
There are a number of Wikitravel and World66 mirrors already out there, supported by ads.
