WorldWideWeb was the first program which used not only the common File Transfer Protocol but also the Hypertext Transfer Protocol, invented by Berners-Lee in 1989.
On April 30, 1993, the CERN directorate released WorldWideWeb into the public domain, and several versions of the software are still available to download from evolt.org's browser archive.
WorldWideWeb was capable of displaying basic style sheets, downloading and opening any file type supported by the NeXT system (which included PostScript, movies, sounds, and so on), browsing newsgroups, and spellchecking.

Tim Berners-Lee: WorldWideWeb, the first Web client(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
The first web browser - or browser-editor rather - was called WorldWideWeb as, after all, when it was written in 1990 it was the only way to see the web.
Much later it was renamed Nexus in order to save confusion between the program and the abstract information space (which is now spelled World Wide Web with spaces).
WorldWideWeb was written in Objective-C. It would browse

He released the program to a number of people at CERN in March, 1991, introducing the web to the high energy physics community, and beginning its spread.
Berners-Lee and a student at CERN named Jean-Francois Groff ported the WorldWideWeb application from the NeXT environment to the more common C language in 1991 and 1992, calling the new browserlibwww.
This was the first browser since Berners-Lee's WorldWideWebbrowser that incorporated an editor, so that you could browse and edit content at the same time.
Although the English word worldwide is normally written as one word (without a space or hyphen), the proper name World Wide Web and abbreviation WWW are now well-established even in formal English.
The earliest references to the Web called it the WorldWideWeb (an example of computer programmers' fondness for intercaps) or the World-Wide Web (with a hyphen, this version of the name is the closest to normal English usage).
Ironically, the abbreviation "WWW" is impractical as it contains more syllables than the full term "World Wide Web", and thus takes longer to say, however it is easier to type.

Early in the development of the WorldWideWeb, writing any paper document would prompt teasing, a wondering why paper was necessary any more.
The original WorldWideWeb program was a hypertext editor which allowed links to be made as easily as followed (with the click of a mouse), hiding all the mess of HTML and URLs.
For example, when reading a document, one could with a key combination create a new hypertext node linked to the selected text in the old document, and start typing in a comment, question, or clarification.

These browsers are often referred to as Internet suites or application suites rather than merely web browsers.
Tim Berners-Lee, who pioneered the use of hypertext for sharing information, created the first web browser, named WorldWideWeb, in 1990 and introduced it to colleagues at CERN in March 1991.
Since then the development of web browsers has been inseparably intertwined with the development of the web itself.
