The next contender however are most likely to come from Asia or the middle-east but there's projects in the west to of course, Fordham Spire in Chicago and Russia Tower in Moscow for example but with it's current designs none of them are to rival the Burj Dubai.

The CN Tower is absolutely the worlds tallest FREE-STANDING STRUCTURE, however if your talking about buildings as structures WITHOUT floors from top to bottom, then yes it’s also the tallest building in the world entirely.
Otherwise it’s fair to say that the new Tapei 101 tower is the “Worlds Tallest Building” since it’s considered a “building” as opposed to a “structure” like the CN Tower.

In 1863 the tallest structure in the world was the " Mole Antonelliana " in Turin Italy, standing at 548 feet.
It originally was not given this title when it opened June 28th (only tallest free-standing structure), 1975; however, in 1995 they revised their decision and proclaimed the CN Tower was infact the World's Tallest Building and Tallest Free-Standing Structure on Land.
The platform sections certainly are structures, but the bulk of their height comes from the teethers that hold them to the sea floor.
