Topic: Worm gear

History of Worm Gear Technology provided by Cleveland Gear Company.
True conjugate action between the worm thread and gear tooth is of prime importance in worm gearing, and efforts have there fore been to improve the contact by strict adherence to closer and closer manufacturing tolerances.
In this phase of the hobbing operation each rotation of the hob is accompanied by a slight feed movement tangential to the gear and has the effect of progressively creating a new series of cutting edges, by relocating them with respect to the gear.
The gear tooth is therefore generated by an immense number of different cuts that result in an almost perfect contour in the finished tooth.

In this case, with a twelve tooth gear, the speed is reduced by a factor of twelve.
Unlike ordinary gears, the motion is not reversible, a worm can drive a gear to reduce speed but a gear cannot drive a worm to increase it.
Worm gears are a compact, efficient means of substantially decreasing speed and increasing power.

Gear Solutions Online: Features: Manufacturing Single-Envelope Worm Gears by Roger Burdick, April 2003
Worm gear sets are used to transmit power between non-parallel, non-intersecting shafts, usually having a shaft angle of 90 degrees, and consist of a worm and the mating member, referred to as a worm wheel or worm gear.
Worm gear sets are generally used in applications where the speed reduction ratio is between 3:1 and 100:1, and in situations where accurate rotary indexing is required.
The worm teeth may have a variety of forms, and are not standardized in the way that parallel axis gearing is, but the worm wheel must have generated teeth to produce conjugate action.

 Worm Gears
A worm drive consists of a large diameter worm wheel with a worm screw meshing with teeth on the periphery of the worm wheel.
The worm is similar to a screw and the worm wheel is similar to a section of a nut.
Worm gears are often limited not by the strength of the teeth but by the heat generated by the low efficiency.

Worm gear - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unlike ordinary gear trains, the direction of transmission (input shaft vs output shaft) is not reversible, due to the greater friction involved between the worm and worm-wheel, when a single start (one spiral) worm is used.
Whether a worm and gear will be self-locking depends on a function of the lead angle, the pressure angle, and the coeeficient of friction; however it is approximately correct to say that a worm and gear will be self-locking if the tangent of the lead angle is less than the coefficient of friction.
The worm gear is not as efficient as a hypoid gear, and such trucks invariably have a very large differential housing, with a correspondingly large volume of gear oil, to absorb and dissipate the heat created.

 Making Wormgears
Worm gears and worm wheels are the system of choice for producing the highest amount of motor speed reduction in a single step.
For gear blanks that are larger than the lathe chuck's capacity it is my habit to lay out a smaller three or four-hole bolt circle on the blank that is concentric with the center hole, to which a metal ring of a size within the chuck's capacity is screwed.
If this were an actual gear blank, and we were using say, a 3/8 inch tap to cut the teeth, on the high side the tap would break itself trying to worm its way into 1/4 inch of metal, and on the low side the teeth would never even engage the blank.

 Howstuffworks "How Gears Work"
Many worm gears have an interesting property that no other gear set has: the worm can easily turn the gear, but the gear cannot turn the worm.
This is because the angle on the worm is so shallow that when the gear tries to spin it, the friction between the gear and the worm holds the worm in place.
One other very interesting usage of worm gears is in the Torsen differential, which is used on some high-performance cars and trucks.

Gear - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gears of differing size are often used in pairs for a mechanical advantage, allowing the torque of the driving gear to produce a larger torque in the driven gear at lower speed, or a smaller torque at higher speed.
A disadvantage of helical gears is a resultant thrust along the axis of the gear, which needs to be accommodated by appropriate thrust bearings, and a greater degree of sliding friction between the meshing teeth, often addressed with specific additives in the lubricant.
This is a gear that resembles a screw, with parallel helical teeth, and mates with a normal spur gear.

Worm Gear Winch Service - Basic Operation
Worm gear winch clutches may disengage and drop or lose control of a load if they are not fully engaged at the beginning of a lift or pull.
For this reason, we recommend that a worm gear should not be replaced without also replacing the steel worm.
A proper "break-in" of a new winch or a repaired winch with a new worm gear set, is needed to produce a gear wear pattern which will maximize component life.

 Howstuffworks "How Gears Work"
It is common for worm gears to have reductions of 20:1, and even up to 300:1 or greater.
This is because the angle on the worm is so shallow that when the gear tries to spin it, the friction between the gear and the worm holds the worm in place.
One other very interesting usage of worm gears is in the Torsen differential, which is used on some high-performance cars and trucks.

 Worm Gear Lubricant
The two members of a worm gear set are known as the worm and the worm wheel, or gear.
In some situations the worm shaft is positioned under the gear and it is the anti-friction bearing, used on the worm shaft, to take end thrust, which is the real problem in this type of gear set.
When the worm shaft is positioned under the worm wheel, some companies recommend worm gear oils that are very light weight (to lubricate the bearings), but the light oil allows excessive metal to metal contact of worm shaft and worm wheel.

Transmission error is normally very small and the gear set is very quiet even with incorrect contact because of a large number of the teeth participate in the contact in the same time.
Gear cutting ratio has to be the same as the gear set ratio so it is impossible to have a hunting ratio for cutting if the gear set does not have it.
Using oversized gear and pinion as electrodes do not solve the problem because it is impossible to cut the gear that is oversized in the same directions those plastic shrinks.

Worm and Worm Gears by CMG, a Gear Manufacturer
Typically, worm and worm gears are used to gain a large reduction of speed between driving and driven shafts in a relatively compact area.
The tooth geometry for the worm gear comes from the worm and typically it is the least damaged in a reverse engineering situation.
CMG has many worm hobs in its inventory and can typically avoid tool up charges, however when trying to replace a worn gear set, this can often times be an issue.
