Wormtongue had ordered him to be kept far away from anything pointy (even now he had been eating with a spork) so he had to resort to other methods of punishment for food-stealing orcs.
Previously he had tried to leave her out of the goings-on seeing as she was in a rather difficult position (and had been rather highstrung to boot), but this was an hour of need.
Wormtongue too turned to face his new and highly reluctant bride, with a curious and fairly apprehensive look.

I began to think that this manipulation of people suggested that Wormtongue was a sociopath, or at least antisocial.
And while this is not quite so apparent in the book as in the film - subtle enough as it was in the film - when one reads passages with Wormtongue in, he seems unhappy, remorseful, that he is bound as he is to Saruman.
Rather than pull my hair out trying to psychoanalyse Grima Wormtongue, I would say that he is whatever suits the author for him to be at any stage in the story telling.

Recruited into the service of Saruman, Wormtongue exploited the old king's dotage, and sought to poison his mind, particularly against Eomer, Saruman's great obstacle to his plans for Rohan.
His plan would doubtless have succeeded but for the timely arrival of Gandalf and the remnant of the Fellowship at Meduseld, which alerted Theoden to Wormtongue's treason, and sent the latter scurrying back to Saruman in Isengard.

She, like King Theoden, was subject to Wormtongue's lies.
