The wingspan is 21-23 mm and the forewings are warm brown with two fl spots along the costa with a fl discal spot completing a distinctive triangle.
There is a narrow pale line near the fringe with a distinct whitish spot near the tornus, although this is not as prominent as in the rather similar Currant Pug.

The name Wormwood comes from the German "wermut", meaning "preserver of the mind", as the herb was reputed to enhance mental functions and alter mental states.
The impression of adult bleached pug expallidata is of a pinkish-grey-brown, rounded, broad-winged pug with suppressed wing markings except for a deeply-fl elongated, straight discoidal mark with two associated costal flish wedges.
The impression of adult wormwoodpug absinthiata is of rich, warm, reddish-brown narrower forewing with a small, rounded or oval discoidal fl spot and the adjacent two dark costal wedges are muted or suffused and do not join with the discoidal to stand out as a dominant feature.
The probability must remain that specimens thought to be bleached pug expallidata from the Eastern counties are likely to be some form of wormwoodpug absinthiata I shall always be pleased to receive specimens or good photo images of moths that any recorder might think to be expallidata.
The fruit is an oblong dry schizocarp, 3-5 mm long.
Pimpinella species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species, including the lime-speck pug and wormwoodpug.
The seed-like fruit (also called aniseed) is used in candy making and sweet baking as well as in anise-flavored liqueurs (for example rakı, arak and ouzo).

WormwoodPug - Butterflies and Moths of Northern Ireland
There is a faint broken white sub-marginal line, two fl costal blotches and a discal spot which are clearly evident against the uniform base colour.
Status: According to Baynes this species is common and widespread in Ireland and here it is one of the most commonly recorded pugs having been found in all counties.
The current purge of ragwort must be having a serious effect on this and many other invertebrates that use the plant.
At least the wormwoodpug has alternative foodplants (such as wormwood and mugwort).
It is interesting how the pattern on the caterpillar resembles the dark markings around the ragwort bud, providing a very efficient camouflage, though this won’t help much if its foodplant is pulled up and burnt.
Herald, Knot Grass, Large Twin-spot Carpet, Lesser Yellow Underwing, Light Arches, Privet Hawk-moth, Ruby Tiger, Sycamore and White-spotted Pug.
The Privet Hawk-moth was only the second I have ever caught in my garden moth trap and after identification it was carefully hidden in the privet hedge.
It is a notable B species (Nb) and although it is absent from the UTB listing from 2004 -2007 it has been recorded, infrequently, in our area."

The latter only is noticed by Bloomfield, who failed to consult the Intelligencer when compiling his Lep.
This species is rather similar to the WormwoodPug, with warm brown forewings and a triangle of fl spots close to the costa, but can be recognized by its broader wings and a more prominent white spot close to the tornus.
Two broods are produced each year with adults on the wing in May and June and again in August
They form patches, that are actually vegetative clones of a single plant.
The flowers of goldenrod are eaten by the larvae of Lepidoptera species including WormwoodPug, Golden-rod Pug, The V-Pug and Common Pug (which also feeds on the leaves).
The whole life cycle of the goldenrod gall fly (Eurosta solidaginis) is associated with goldenrods, living but two weeks outside their host plant.
Some species produce natural pesticides (especially alkaloids) to deter or even kill animals that would eat them.
Senecio species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including Angle Shades, Buff Ermine, Common Pug, Double-striped Pug, Flame Shoulder, Golden-rod Pug, Setaceous Hebrew Character and WormwoodPug.
