The Wormwood Pug (Eupithecia absinthiata) is a moth of the family Geometridae.
The wingspan is 21-23 mm and the forewings are warm brown with two fl spots along the costa with a fl discal spot completing a distinctive triangle.
There is a narrow pale line near the fringe with a distinct whitish spot near the tornus, although this is not as prominent as in the rather similar Currant Pug.

The name Wormwood comes from the German "wermut", meaning "preserver of the mind", as the herb was reputed to enhance mental functions and alter mental states.
It was hung in houses as an insect repellent.
It used to be believed that Wormwood would counteract the effects of Hemlock and toadstool poisoning.

Status: According to Baynes this species is common and widespread in Ireland and here it is one of the most commonly recorded pugs having been found in all counties.

The current purge of ragwort must be having a serious effect on this and many other invertebrates that use the plant.
At least the wormwood pug has alternative foodplants (such as wormwood and mugwort).
It is interesting how the pattern on the caterpillar resembles the dark markings around the ragwort bud, providing a very efficient camouflage, though this won’t help much if its foodplant is pulled up and burnt.

This species was identified in the garden on 30/6 and 6/8 with a further record from Surlingham Church Marsh on 26/8.
Finally, an unidentified pug larva was found on Common Knapweed at Two Mile Bottom on 23/8.
Singles of this species were trapped in the garden on seven dates between 8/5 and 7/6, with a further record from Mannington Hall on 3/6.
