This London guild was responsible for enforcing the regulations for baking known as the Assize of Bread and Ale, which were put into law during the reign of Henry the Third around 1266 or 1267.
Since this statute threatened harsh punishments for bakers who sold short-weight bread, bakers added a thirteenth loaf to each dozen, just to be safe.
This led to the term "baker's dozen" for the number thirteen.

The 107 Livery Companies are trade associations based in the City of London, each known as the Worshipful Company of the relevant trade or profession.
The Livery Companies originally developed as guilds and were responsible for the regulation of their trades, controlling, for instance, wages and labour conditions.
Among the earliest companies known to have possessed halls were the Merchant Taylors and Goldsmiths in the 14th century, but neither theirs nor other companies' original halls remain; the few survivors of the Great Fire were destroyed, along with many reconstructed ones, during the Blitz.

Worship usually refers to specific acts of religious praise, honour, or devotion, typically directed to a supernatural being such as a god or goddess.
Religious worship may be performed individually, in informally organized groups, or as part of an organized service with a designated leader (as in a church, synagogue, temple, or mosque).
Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy distinguish between worship (Latin adoratio, Greek latreia, λατρεια) which is due to God alone (see latria), and veneration (Latin veneratio, Greek dulia δουλεια), which may be lawfully offered to the saints.

The story behind a loaf of bread
Bakers earned less than this, but they were not dependent on the weather and could always be at work, unlike the carpenters.
The bakers who ran the place had secret openings made in the moulding boards, and when the people's dough was placed on the boards, one of the bakers would secretly pinch off piece after piece from the uncooked loaves for their own benefit.
Bakers were forbidden to sell bread until it was twelve hours old; no stale bread could be exchanged; only 'regulation' flour could be used, the millers preparing flour from such grains as the authorities provided, and under their control.

 Bakers' Marks: the series.
Sylvia Thrupp mentions baker's marks only briefly (she refers to them as seals) - (The seal was) "forced on him as a means of identifying him for punishment if his bread were unwholesome or short of weight.
Thrupp states that baker's marks in England were "a combination of dots and initials, less elaborate than merchants' marks." She also cites a 1440 court case, where a baker named William Hobold sued another for using his mark (three prick-marks).
Baker's marks are not shown in surviving paintings of the baking process, so I had to experiment with what little is available: a few descriptions in books such as the one above, and a surviving item in Paris' Musee du Moyen-Age (Museum of the Middle Ages).

Before the end of the twelfth century, the Bakers, Pepperers (afterwards a branch of the Grocers' Company), are also mentioned, and there appears to have been associations of Turners, and Coopers.
When in that year the Common Council decided that the intervention of a Company should no longer be necessary, fears were expressed that the end of these ancient corporate bodies was in sight.
That this fear was groundless is seen in the great increase during the last century in the number of those entitled to wear the livery, or clothing, of their respective companies.
