Until 1835 membership of a Company was the only avenue to the Freedom, or full citizenship, of the City of London.
When in that year the Common Council decided that the intervention of a Company should no longer be necessary, fears were expressed that the end of these ancient corporate bodies was in sight.
That this fear was groundless is seen in the great increase during the last century in the number of those entitled to wear the livery, or clothing, of their respective companies.

Architects can work as Project Managers, and can assist in everything from the initial stages of site selection to the latter stages of building completion.
Throughout the duration of the project, architects may be instrumental in coordinating a team of specialized professionals including surveyors, builders, landscape architects, engineers, interior designers and other sub-contracted personnel.
Architects help their clients decide what is needed, research the building type (both existing structures and new techniques), assess the site and its surroundings (the 'environment context') and check the relevant regulations (town planning and construction standards).

From the 18th century many companies began a long drawn-out transition from their key role as regulative industrial bodies to associations mainly concerned with the management of their often valuable properties and the sponsorship of charitable, educational or 'clubbable' activities.
Whilst livery companies are based in the City their membership is widely drawn and in many cases their charitable support flows out far further than the City and Greater London.
Not least because the new companies are helping to transform their image into more active, contemporary organisations (which include women) of people at the top of their field.
