  History of the Chartered Surveyors’ Company
The Worshipful Company of Chartered Surveyors was granted Letters Patent in May 1977 and will celebrate its 30th birthday in May 2007.
The Company does not have its own hall and so has the pleasure of meeting and dining in many of the 34 Livery Halls throughout the City (a further Hall lies just outside the City boundary).
The majority of Liverymen are Chartered Surveyors, but the company is allowed to have up to 10% of Liverymen who are eminent in the property profession but not Chartered Surveyors.

The early companies, mostly created around the 11th century, were the medieval equivalent of trading standards departments – checking the quality of goods, controlling imports, setting wages and working conditions, training apprentices and licensing the traders to carry out their business around the Guildhall in the heart of the City.
