Therefore, the Clockmakers’ Company was founded1 as a trade guild to control the training, production, and quality of the clocks and watches made in the City of London, and in 1631 King Charles I granted the guild a royal charter.
In return for rigorous protection by the company from outside competition, the members had to submit to strict regulations concerning how they treated their customers, fellow makers, and apprentices, and the standards their work was held to.
With the death of Cromwell and restoration of the monarchy in 1660, the golden age of English clockmaking was in motion.

It is now celebrated for its holding of rare clockmakers workbooks and related documents (such as Victor Kullberg's Records and many 18th century holograph manuscripts by John Harrison).
The Clockmakers' Collection was begun in 1814 and is therefore the oldest collection specifically of clocks and watches in the world.
A richly illustrated booklet "The Clockmakers of London", an account of the Company and its Collection, has been published by the Company and is available from Guildhall Library shop, or from the Clerk of the Company, or by e-mail from sales@clockmakers.org.

The museum of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers, founded in 1631, illustrates 500 years of timekeeping.
Situated in the public library adjoining the Guildhall, this small museum is the world's oldest collection of timepieces with 700 exhibits, including some 600 watches and clocks dating from the 16th to 19th centuries.
One of the most important technological advances, the marine chronometer for navigation, took place around the Guildhall, where clockmakers have worked from the earliest days of the guild.

His first wooden clock of only three that survived wad built in 1713 it is held in London at the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers' Collection in Guildhall; the second was built in 1715 and is held at the Science Museum; the third was built in 1717 and is being held at Nostell Priory in Yorkshire.
