Until 1835 membership of a Company was the only avenue to the Freedom, or full citizenship, of the City of London.
When in that year the Common Council decided that the intervention of a Company should no longer be necessary, fears were expressed that the end of these ancient corporate bodies was in sight.
That this fear was groundless is seen in the great increase during the last century in the number of those entitled to wear the livery, or clothing, of their respective companies.

Mennonite Life - December 2000 - Reinhild Janzen article
For the Council room of the City Hall of Basel, Holbein executed a wall painting with King Hezekiah as someone who prohibited the worship of images (2 Kings 18: 4), a theme close to the heart of iconoclastic Swiss reformers in the year 1530.
In these worship spaces the believers face the clock, while in most mainstream contemporary American Mennonite churches a clock is placed in the back of the congregation and a cross is placed in front.
The foreword states that the book is intended for use in the home as well as for congregational worship, and that its ultimate purpose is to prepare the community of believers for eternal life.
