 Livery Company
Livery Companies are governed by a Master (known in some Companies as the Prime Warden), a number of Wardens (who may be known as the Upper, Middle, Lower, or Renter Wardens), and a Court of Assistants, which elects the Master and Wardens.
One may become a freeman, or acquire the "Freedom of the Company", upon fulfilling the Company's criteria; traditionally, one may be admitted by "patrimony" if either parent was a liverymen of the company, by "servitude" if one has served as an apprentice in the trade for the requisite number of years, or by purchase.

 Origin of the Girdler Name
In this case, the name was from the actual occupation of "Girdler" who was a maker of "Girdles", with the term girdle being descriptive of a belt worn round the waist or hips to secure or confine the garments.
This craft company dates back into Anglo-Saxon times and the first recorded Master of the Girdler's Company was "Ralphe De la Barre" year 1180, the second was "Gerard the Girdler".
Please observe that the art of the girdler did not stop with a plain and simple belt, but it was in the "harnessing" and "garnishing" of the girdle that the skill of the artizan was shown.

Until 1835 membership of a Company was the only avenue to the Freedom, or full citizenship, of the City of London.
When in that year the Common Council decided that the intervention of a Company should no longer be necessary, fears were expressed that the end of these ancient corporate bodies was in sight.
That this fear was groundless is seen in the great increase during the last century in the number of those entitled to wear the livery, or clothing, of their respective companies.

After considerable negotiation the City Companies collectively agreed to subscribe a sum of £20,000, in consideration for which they were to be given control of the lands in the districts of Coleraine and Derry, with a view to colonising these lands with English Protestants and quelling the rebellions, which were so frequently troubling the Government.
Freshfield was instructed to protect the interests of the Company, but there is no further record relating to the matter, and one can only assume that the Upholders' Company were able to establish that they had in fact relinquished their interest in the land.
the Company's silver-gilt salt cellar was borrowed by the Victoria and Albert Museum for exhibition purposes, whilst in 1928 and 1929 it was borrowed for exhibition at Lansdowne House and Seaford House.

 The Worshipful Company of Woolmen
The livery companies probably had their origins in this country before 1066 and are similar to the fraternities and guilds (or mysteries) that flourished throughout Europe for many centuries.
Funerals were particularly important occasions, attended by all members of the company, when the coffin would be covered by fine cloths, a few of which are preserved to this day.
In medieval times "livery" was the term used for the clothing, food and drink provided to the officers and retainers of great households, such as those of barons, bishops, colleges or guilds.

The Worshipful Company of Paviors - Links to Other Livery Companies
Trade and craft associations known as guilds or livery companies have flourished all over Europe for centuries, but the City of London companies, now collectively known as the Livery, are unique in their survival, number and diversity.
Today's livery companies are not picturesque leftovers of history but living institutions, whose liverymen carry out important functions in the elections of the government of the City of London and certain of its officers.
Several companies - such as the Goldsmiths Company, which has been responsible since 1300 for testing the purity of marking gold and silver wares - still have a continuing statutory or regulatory role, while others support related industries in a variety of ways.
