Ailuk, located 72 km north of Wotje Atoll in the Ratak Chain, is a small atoll formation consisting of around 57 islets that are virtually all located on the eastern side of the atoll.
The western and southern sides of the atoll consist of an nearly continuous reef rim that is largely submerged.

On 23 December, Majuro Atoll was revealed as the selected "Island 'X' " to be secured, and on receipt of this decision on 26 December, General Holland Smith set up the Majuro Landing Force, consisting of the 2d Battalion, 106th Infantry, with the V Amphibious Corps Reconnaissance Company and the 1st Defense Battalion, FMF, attached.
In order for Majuro Atoll to qualify as an additional objective, it had to fulfill the description of "lightly held." Intelligence officers came to the conclusion that there were few, if any, defensive installations on its islands and "small" defensive forces.
Wotje received carrier strikes from planes of USS Saratoga, Princeton, and Langley, and was likewise bombarded by Pensacola, Salt Lake City, and Chester, which received somewhat less effective fire from the Japanese defenses.

We had a day of string Westerlies yesterday which was very uncomfortable but today is clear and sunny with bright skies.

As a result of the lack of shipping services needed to get produce to market, people on Wotje — which is known in the Marshalls as the "garden island" for its fertile soil — essentially stopped farming.

The Japanese Flagship to the Japanese Navy, she was Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto's floating fortress during Japan's World War II attack on Pearl Harbor and was a treasure to the Japanese forces.
In 1943, in Wotje Atoll in the Marshall Islands, she got hit with a 155mm shell that killed the captain and five officers and wounded another 18 men.
She carried 2929 barrels of fuel oil and 168 barrels of diesel oil and was at 95% of capacity of both fuel and ordnance when she was sunk by ABLE and is now at rest on her side in Bikini's lagoon.
