"Written in the big wind" by Bob Shacochis (Harper's Magazine)
While the prevailing winds carried the storm from east to west/northwest, the west-to-east rotation of the earth rubbed against the storm with a soft friction, like a flywheel or a gear set perpendicular to the heaped plate of the weather system, causing it to slowly spin counterclockwise in a spiral twist.
As winds and enormous bands of rain clouds spiral inward and wall up into a monstrous chimney-like tower of weather, air pressure plummets to its nadir, shaving the full weight of gravity by 70 pounds per square foot for each inch subtracted from the barometer.
The working-class towns of McClellanville and Awendaw, situated directly north of Hugo's eye, endured the worst—sustained winds estimated at 138 mph, peak gusts at 179 mph, a storm surge of 17 feet—and were the slowest to recover.

Based on a novel by Robert Wilder, Written on the Wind reprises a plot motif that had appeared before in Vincente Minelli's Undercurrent and Max Ophul's Caught, recounting the fate of a young woman who unwarily marries an unbalanced wealthy man probably modeled upon Howard Hughes.
Looking at Written on the Wind almost fifty years later offers something of the voyeuristic pleasure of studying life in the dreary Eisenhower years through a telephoto lens-just as did the protagonist of Hitchcock's Rear Window.
But Written on the Wind is no 1960s acid trip like Easy Rider or Performance, and Sirk inscribes his signature indelibly on every image in the film.

BBC - Action Network - Sustainable Small Community Wind farms
On the whole I am against wind farms in that they seem to be placed as far from the the communities that need large amounts of power, ie cities, as it is possible to be.
However some communities in the rural areas want windfarms because of the possibility of local employment and their views must not be seen as secondary to large landowners, walkers etc who do not live in the area.
The idea behind our wind park is that the profits stay as local as possible, for use in community projects whilst the site also functions as a tourist site (by use of a viewing platform, from which the whole clyde valley will be visible).

WRITTEN ON THE WIND is a pretty steamy tale of jealousy, lust and murder, which certainly pushed the limits of censorship in 1956.
The plot of WRITTEN ON THE WIND sounds like pure soap opera, but the script by George Zuckerman is well written and the performances are all first rate.
WRITTEN ON THE WIND was filmed in glorious Technicolor and Sirk uses color continuously throughout the film to ramp up the audience's response to the story playing out on the screen.

The second of Criterion's recent releases of director Douglas Sirk's work (the other being "All That Heaven Allows"), "Written On The Wind" is another in the romantic melodrama genre that Sirk was famed for providing works for.
The performances throughout "Written" are terrific - Malone even won an Oscar for her portrayal of the sexy Marylee.
SOUND: "Written on the Wind" is presented with mono audio and, like "All That Heaven Allows", works well simply due to the fact that the audio quality remains noticably above-average in comparison to many other thin, hollow-sounding mono presentations of the era.

Wind Farms: 4 Apr 2005: Written answers (TheyWorkForYou.com)
As part of the planning process for wind farms in the UK, developers have to provide environmental assessments of their proposals which consider impacts on a range of factors, including those related to birds.
The DTI advises wind farm developers to make early contact with these organisations as part of their preparatory planning for wind farm projects.
Experience from other countries shows that badly sited wind farms can have impacts on birds, for example, Altamont Pass in California where there is extensive wind development and also a high year-round raptor use which has led to high bird mortality rates.

One of the main drawbacks, however, is that sometimes the wind doesn't blow and at other times it blows so hard that the turbines have to be shut down.
The more wind power you have, the more back-up you need, and if that back-up capacity is only being used part of the time it will be expensive to build and could be more environmentally damaging to run.
In a forthcoming article for the Institution of Civil Engineering, he says wind power will "do nothing" to offset the inevitable loss of firm generating capacity, and £40bn-£50bn needs to be spent by 2020 on new generating capacity from a diversity of sources.

News for a Synergic Earth :
Wind power's ascendance has been so stunning that advocates are now rallying around an idea that would have seemed preposterous just a couple of years ago: that the wind could supply 12 percent of the world's electrical demand by 2020.
One of the most important reasons is that clean, renewable wind power comes with a serious hitch: while conventional power plants yield a steady stream of electricity, wind turbines often ply turbulent gusts and therefore spit out an irregular stream of electricity that is tough for power grids to swallow.
Not only are the technologies making wind power more palatable to grid operators, they are even making it possible for engineers to finally harness wind energy's tremendous potential in wind-swept, remote locales.

Such a reading of Written on the Wind was encouraged by Sirk himself, who worked with Brecht in the German theatre and believed in his principles (hinging on the idea of audience distanciation which results in detached intellectual analysis rather than emotional catharsis).

When its director, Douglas Sirk, said Written on the Wind was “a film about failure,” he hardly did justice to the way pent-up, unfulfilled sexuality spills onto the screen and into the visual excess that has come to be considered his cinematic signature.
Failure and frustration are the forces that drive Written on the Wind: Robert Stack’s Kyle Hadley drowns his sexual insecurity in alcoholism, and Dorothy Malone, as his sister Marylee, forgets her unrequited love for Mitch Wayne (Rock Hudson) with promiscuous pick-ups.

There is even a rumor circulating that Dylan did not write "Blowin' in the Wind," that it was written by a Millburn (N.J.) High student named Lorre Wyatt, who sold it to the singer.
Svedburg brought up an old story that a high school student named Lorre Wyatt had written "Blowin' in the Wind" and sold it to Dylan for a thousand dollars and, while carefully avoiding saying Wyatt had written the song, she managed to sow a large seed of doubt by implication.
Some would even put forth the theory that Dylan had coincidentally written a different song also titled "Blowin' in the Wind" at about the same time Wyatt wrote his version, and, finding Wyatt's composition to be superior to his own, Dylan secured copyright protection for that version in place of his own.

A crazy cross between George Stevens' Giant and the TV series "Dallas," Written on the Wind (1956) is a lush, satirical, yet ultimately serious melodrama about love and lust within a wealthy Texas oil family.
Though Sirk's film is hailed in today's quarterlies as a great satiric poke in the placid '50s eyeball, at the time of its release the film was charged with bringing an unwanted frankness and honesty about intimate relations to the screen — which no doubt was the source of its great popularity.
Supplements include the theatrical trailers for Written on the Wind and All That Heaven Allows, and liner notes by film theorist Laura Mulvey, which gives a brisk summary of the director and his place in history.
