Polish students at Wroclaw University were occasionally considered to bechiefly instrumental in providing patriotic and political inspiration to the students' movement in the former Polish areas and elsewhere.
Thanks to all these efforts, on the basis of the August 24, 1945, Act, Wroclaw University was established as a Polish tertiary education establishment, and opened as soon as in 1945.
In 1950 tertiary-level schools in Wroclaw were reorganized, and at first the Faculty of Medicine was separated from the University, forming a new Medical Academy, and in 1951 the Technical University was made a separate organization, while the Faculties of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine formed a Higher School of Agriculture.

This University came to life thanks to the removal of the university located in Frankfurt on Oder (existing since 1506) and its fusion with "Academia Leopoldina".
 Among main trends of the University scientific activities are research on pathogenesis, immunology, diagnostics and treatment of tumors, influence of the environment on human health, basic and clinical examination on ethiopathogenesis and treatment of gastrointestinal as well as nephrological, respiratory, neurological, hematological and circulation diseases including research on synthesis of new drugs.
There are 14 bilateral agreements contracted between particular clinics or departments apart from agreements signed by the authorities on behalf of the whole University, for example the trilateral agreement with medical faculties of the universities in Germany and France.

The Fellowship commemorates Agata Sypniewska, a TCDS Krakow Institute alumna and a doctoral candidate in cultural studies and political philosophy at the University of Wroclaw, who was brutally murdered on September 1, 2002.
To honor her outstanding work and career that were tragically cut short only weeks before her graduation and advancement to a new academic position, the Agata Sypniewska Fellows will be doctoral students in social sciences whose research work engages the fundamental ethical and moral dimensions of contemporary political life.
In addition, Wroclaw University has established a scholarship fund to support the studies of Justyna Sypniewska, Agata's sister, who was left homeless as a further consequence of the crime.

Wrocław University Library has inherited parts of historical collections that are not related to the region.
In 1702, when the Leopold University was established, its library housed a very old collection known as “Bibliotheca Vetus”, and a collection of gifts acquired on the basis of the bishop Carl Francis Neander testament.
In 1811, when Leopold University of Wrocław and Viadrina University of Frankfurt made a fusion, these two collections were added to the library collection housed in the building on the Sand Island.
