The Prussian administrative unit that covered the territory of the Duchy was called the Province of the Grand Duchy of Poznań in the years 1815-1849, and later to simplify just the Province of Poznań (Polish: Prowincja Poznańska, German: Provinz Posen).
Later, these were redivided into 40 counties, plus 2 urban districts.
Up to 1830 the Prussian authorities were relatively tolerant to the Polish people, only the Prussian administrative schemes were introduced and the role of German language was strengthened in education.

Cities and rural counties are identified by 5-digit codes.
The first two digits identify the voivodeship; the third digit indicates the administrative status of the unit (type of city or rural county); and the last two digits uniquely identify the city or rural county within the first three digits.
These codes were applied in all cases when it was not possible to assign a city or rural county code but information on the voivodeship was available.

Note: Prussian provinces were subdivided into units called "Kreise" (singular "Kreis", abbreviated "Kr.", English circle), which were similar to large counties in US terms.
Cities would have their own "Stadtkreis" (English: municipal county) and the surrounding rural area would be named for the city, but referred to as a "Landkreis" (English: rural county).
In the case of Posen, the Landkreis was split into two: Landkreis Posen West, and Landkreis Posen East.

We extended support to undertakings in the realms of theater, film, music, and literature as well as to interdisciplinary projects pursued by county and community self-government bodies, cultural institutions and centers, NGOs, educational institutions, and libraries.
As in previous years, our assessments of incoming applications took into account not only the artistic merits of the proposed project, but also the educational ones, especially as regards fostering tolerance for different cultures, religions, and nations.
