Wuchale (also spelled Ucciali) is a town in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia.
While it was a fief of Queen Taytu, Italian ambassador Count Pietro Antonelli met with Emperor Menelik II at Wuchale shortly after the death in battle of Emperor Yohannes IV.
The two countries came to an agreement, the Treaty of Wuchale, which was signed on 2 May 1889.

In 1889, John was killed fighting the Mahdists, and, following a short succession crisis, the king of Shoa (who had Italian support) was crowned emperor as Menelik II.
Due to a dispute over the meaning of the treaty (Italy claimed it had been given a protectorate over Ethiopia, which Menelik denied), Italy invaded Ethiopia in 1895 but was decisively defeated by Menelik’s forces at Adwa on Mar. 1, 1896.
By the subsequent Treaty of Addis Ababa (Oct., 1896), the Treaty of Wuchale was annulled, and Italy recognized the independence of Ethiopia while retaining its Eritrean colonial base.

When Menelik felt unduly threatened by Yohannes IV, as is briefly described below and more fully exposed elsewhere in this series of reports, Negus Menelik entered into the Wuchale agreement with Italy that secured him half of the armaments and munitions that he sought.
Later, in 1896, Emperor Menelik II signed a treaty with Italy in which article 2 simply states that the Wuchale treaty is annulled (null and void).
He paid all that he owed to the Italians in the Wuchale Treaty before marching against them to Adwa.

Menelik of Shewa and his Queen were in Wuchale in Wello in the first week of April, 1889, when news of the death of the Emperor reached them.
It was at this point that Makonnen told the Emperor of the convention that he had signed in Rome that had fixed the borders to the position the Italian army held at October 1st.
On February 11, Major Salsa arrived with the preposterous demand "Renew the Treaty of Wuchale and give back to Italy all the land that has been seized from her." Major Salsa was orderd to leave.

The 4.2 million dollar Jijiga-Togo Wuchale road, which is expected to facilitate relief aid from the port of Berbera, is under construction, it was learnt.
