Currently, Taiwan, Kinmen (Quemoy), Wuchiu (Wuciou) and Matsu off the coast of mainland Fukien, and Taiping (Itu Aba) and Pratas in the South China Sea effectively make up the entire state known as the Republic of China.

The Wuchiu Islands are known for their strategic position -- and have been the target of threats from China in the past.
Wuchiu, though not the closest outpost to China, has been threatened several times over the past few years with a potential attack by the Chinese troops.
Intelligence sources said China planned to invade Wuchiu to punish Lee for the statements he made, but that plan and other relevant military actions were dropped after Taiwan was hit by the devastating 921 earthquake last year, not long after "state-to-state" was first mentioned.

China is thought likely to object to the development of Wuchiu because it lies only 20 nautical miles from PRC-controlled Meizhou Island.
Previously, members of the project's review committee who were opposed to atomic energy had stopped the environmental assessment from going forward by citing Wuchiu's proximity to the mainland and the likelihood that China would vigorously oppose development.

Hu noted that some have criticized the AEC in the past for acting as both "player and referee," a reference to the fact that in addition to overseeing nuclear safety, the AEC is also engaged in research work on nuclear energy.

China May Increase Military Pressure Against Taiwan   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
A tiny island called Wuchiu, held by Taiwan, is only about 10 miles away, and officials and analysts in Taiwan concede that it would be a relatively simple affair, in military terms, for Chinese troops to seize the island.
One defense official in Taiwan said in an interview Monday that it is conceivable China will attack a small island such as Wuchiu, seize it, and then move back away from it, just to send a signal to Taiwan of its military capabilities.
He pointed out that this scenario would be similar to the one China followed in early 1979, when it attacked Vietnam and then, after suffering significant casualties, retreated from the territory it had taken.

However, officials at Taipower's Nuclear Backend Management Department told the Taipei Times on Thursday that the company's proposal to build a waste repository in Wuchiu was still in the works.
Furthermore, in May, the Atomic Energy Council said it would not back Taipower's initiative to build a final repository for low-level radioactive waste in Wuchiu because difficulties pertaining to logistics and supervision made the site impractical.
Reportedly, the idea that the company is reviewing alternatives could be attributed to the pressure from the Cabinet, which formed a special committee to handle the relocation of radioactive waste stored on Lanyu (Orchid Island).

Asian Economic News: Taipower denies China opposes nuclear storage site
The Liberty Times reported Wednesday China fears Taiwan's military could use the harbor facilities that would have to be built on Hsiao Wuchiu to accommodate large cargo ships bringing low-level radioactive waste from Taiwan proper.
China's military conveyed to Taipower through unofficial channels it would consider the presence of a major quay a ''military provocation,'' sparking Taipower to temporarily halt the project, the newspaper said.
Hsiao Wuchiu is a small island belonging to the Taiwan-controlled Matsu Islands, which are located in the northern Taiwan Strait about 12 kilometers off the mainland coast.
