Political_status_of_Taiwan - Encyclopedia online   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The controversy over the political status of the Republic of China hinges on whether its existence as a state is legitimate and recognised.
Currently, Taiwan; Kinmen (Quemoy), Wuchiu (Wuciou), Matsu, and some other islands off the coast of mainland Fukien; as well as Taiping (Itu Aba) and Pratas in the South China Sea effectively make up the entire state known as the Republic of China (ROC).
The ROC ruled mainland China, and claimed sovereignty over Outer Mongolia and Tannu Uriankhai (part of which is present day Tuva) before its government was relocated to Taipei in 1949.
