Five villages, three fishing farms and two schools were engulfed in icy flood water; 4,000 people in 900 families were forced from their homes, leaving farm machinery, livestock, crops and most of their assets to be frozen in a sea of ice.
The Yellow River in Wuhai froze almost one month earlier last year, while the temperature in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region to the south of Wuhai was unusually high compared to previous years.
