Wuhu is ideal for those seeking the real China, those who want to experience the effect that China's phenomenal growth has had at ground zero, and those who want to experience the day to day life of the average Chinese citizen.
Wuhu is China in all its filthy glory, a stereotypical Chinese city with all the bells and whistles; beggars, chaotic traffic, rubbish strewn streets and footpaths covered in gobs of spittle.
Wuhu enjoyed increased trade and prosperity in rice, wood and tea, until the Warlord Era of the 1920s and 1930s, when bandits were active in the area.

Written in diary form, the book illustrates LuLu's (and her mother's) efforts to come to terms with her adoption, her abandonment, and their 2 month integration into the city of Wuhu.
"Wuhu Diary" is a slight but worthy addition to the growing canon of books about Chinese adoption; it is a quick and well-written read, though I wish the book contained more about Lulu and less about Ms.

All she knew about her was that the baby had been born in Wuhu, a city in southern China, and left near a police station in her first three days of life.
In Wuhu Diary, we follow Emily and LuLu through a country where children are doted on yet often summarily abandoned and where immense human friendliness can coexist with outbursts of state-orchestrated hostility–particularly after the U. accidentally bombs the Chinese embassy in Belgrade.
We see Emily unearthing precious details of her child’s past and LuLu coming to terms with who she is. The result is a book that will delight anyone interested in China, and that will move and instruct anyone who has ever adopted--or considered adopting--a child.
