Is Wushu the same as Kungfu?
The trend has been so established that today when the term "wushu" is used, especially in the West, it is conceptualized as a demonstrative sport, whereas when the term "kungfu" is used it is conceptualized as a martial art.
Thus, Shaolin Kungfu is "shaolinquan" or "shaolin wushu" in Chinese, and Tai Chi Kungfu is "taijiquan" or "taiji wushu".
The wushu instructors were quite right to say that wushu was derived from Shaolin Kungfu because except for Taijiquan and aerobatic movements, virtually all wushu movements were taken from Shaolin Kungfu.

The brain shuts down and the person 'goes to sleep' (hence the term 'sleeper hold') when the jugular veins and carotid arteries are sealed.
To avoid confusion, I suggest that the term 'choke' only be used when referring to sealing the breath techniques (respiratory restraints) and that the term 'neck restraint' be used to describe sealing the vein techniques (vascular restraints).
The fundamental differences between sealing the breath (the choke) and sealing the vein (lateral vascular neck restraint or the 'sleeper hold') are evident by the angles of attack on the neck (see the attached figure of the cross-section of the neck).

Many consider wushu a better term for Chinese martial arts, as it translates directly into "martial art."
The term is first used by a Westerner, French Jesuit missionary Jean Joseph Marie Amiot, in the 18th Century and later popularized in the West by famous film martial artist Bruce Lee.
Part of the confusion around this term comes from the many ways the Chinese characters 功夫 can be romanized, as Chinese romanization systems have evolved much in the past years.
