 Wutai Shan Travel Guide
One of the earliest sites where Buddhism took hold in China, Wutai Shan has been a religious centre at least since the reign of Emperor Ming Di (58-75 AD), when, according to legend, an Indian monk arrived at the mountain and had a vision in which he met the Manjusri Buddha.
Each Buddhist mountain is dedicated to a particular Bodhisattva, and Wutai Shan became dedicated to Manjusri (also known as the Wenchu Buddha), god of wisdom, who is depicted riding a lion and carrying a sword to cleave ignorance and a manuscript (to represent a sutra).
By the time of the Northern Wei, Wutai Shan was a prosperous Buddhist centre, important enough to be depicted on a mural at the Dunhuang Caves in Gansu.
