Boston.com / News / Nation / Wyandotte Nation seeks seized assets
An attorney for the Wyandotte Nation of Oklahoma asked a federal judge Monday to force the state of Kansas to return cash and gambling machines seized when officials shut down a tribal casino in Kansas City.
The Wyandotte Nation is seeking an injunction that would remain in effect until the judge considers a lawsuit the tribe filed against Kansas officials.
Although the Wyandottes' headquarters are in Oklahoma, the tribe has Kansas roots going back to the 19th century.

Las Vegas SUN: Alaska official criticizes closure of Kansas casino
"We went in based on what we feel was a violation of state law; we believed the Wyandotte tribe of Oklahoma was violating Kansas law by operating the gambling facility there in Kansas City, Kan.," Whitney Watson, a spokesman for Kline, said.
"The law that the Wyandotte Nation is following was passed by Congress, not an attorney at the NIGC who arbitrarily decided she had the power to harm my nation," Bearskin said.
The commission ruled in March that the casino was operating illegally and gave the Wyandottes a week to respond, after which Kline had police and Kansas Bureau of Investigation agents close the casino and haul off its gambling machines.

SignOnSanDiego.com > News > Nation -- Authorities shut down Wyandotte-run casino in downtown Kansas City
The National Indian Gaming Commission ruled last week that the casino was operating illegally and gave the Wyandotte Nation of Oklahoma a week to respond to the ruling.
Although the Wyandotte Nation is federally recognized, the gaming commission ruled the tribe cannot have a casino at the site because the Wyandottes are based in Oklahoma and has no strong historical connection to the land.
But state and local authorities gave the tribe the week to close and began removing more than 150 gambling machines from the building Friday.

Las Vegas SUN: Attorneys argue over shutdown
The Wyandotte Nation said the state has no jurisdiction on what the tribe says is tribal land.
U.S. District Judge Julie Robinson said Wednesday the Wyandotte Nation has not shown that it would suffer irreparable harm if the casino were to remain closed, nor did it show convincing evidence it would win a legal fight to keep its casino operation open.
Assistant State Attorney General Steve Alexander said the state disagrees that the property can be classified as tribal land, an issue he said was left up in the air by a 1996 federal appeals court ruling that allowed the land to be placed in trust for the tribe.

The Wyandotte Nation of Oklahoma made no public announcement about an opening date for the casino, located in a former Masonic Hall next to an old tribal cemetery.
The city has long supported the Oklahoma tribe's effort to build a Kansas casino, but not in its current downtown location.
The casino, with about 150 machines and only room for one person to walk down the aisles at a time, is wedged between office buildings, across from City Hall and near the Robert J. Dole federal courthouse.

Boston.com / News / Local / Conn. / Indian tribes looking beyond reservation borders for casinos
In April, authorities shut down a Kansas City, Kan., casino operated by the Wyandotte Nation of Oklahoma after the National Indian Gaming Commission ruled that the off-reservation casino was operating illegally.
Interior Secretary Gale Norton weighed in against off-reservation casinos in late 2002 when she refused to sign a compact between the Seneca Nation and the state of New York allowing the tribe to build off-reservation.
But about a dozen tribes are far enough along to have submitted environmental studies to the BIA, and many more are in earlier stages of exploring off-reservation casinos, experts said.
