The term "wye" represents any structure shaped like a "Y." The WYE Interchange in Boise picked up the nickname "The Flying WYE" from popular usage after it was opened for traffic as the Maple Grove Interchange in 1969.
The WYE Interchange came into being at the completion of two projects connected with then Interstate 80N - The Boise West Connector (now just the Connector) and the Boise Bypass (now I-84), from Maple Grove to Isaac's Canyon.
