In 1927, after it became University College, Leicester, students sat the examinations for external degrees of the University of London.
In 1957 the college was granted its Royal Charter, and has since then had the status of a University with the right to award its own degrees.
The University is notable for its research, particularly in the areas of biochemistry and genetics.

Wyggeston Hospital in Leicester was founded by William Wyggeston the Younger in 1513.
In letters patent in 1572 it was stated that the hospital should be for ever called "Wyggeston's Hospital", and that the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster should appoint the Master and be a Visitor.
Wyggeston's Hospital makes an annual grant to the Trustees of the Wyggeston Schools Foundation who distribute this money with other income by making grants to students at the colleges.

Leicester’s Mixed team, Cannon’s faced opposition from Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth I B team in their first match of the A Division.
Their defence was standing firm against the Wyggeston hitting and one point in particular was retrieved very well by Cassie White to win the point as Wyggeston stood rooted to the spot.
Wyggeston moved into what seemed like an unassailable lead at 21 — 15 but Cannon’s won the side out and Sudhir Jethwa played a captain’s role as he took Cannon’s through to set point on his serving.
