Wymondham Abbey (pronounced Windham) is situated in the town of Wymondham in Norfolk, England.
It is now the parish church of Wymondham, but it started life as a Benedictine priory.
It was founded in 1107 by William d'Albini, Chief Butler to King Henry I as a dependency of the Benedictine monastery at St Albans, but became an Abbey in its own right in 1448.

Wymondham's most famous inhabitant was Robert Ket or Kett, who in 1549 led a rebellion of peasants and small farmers who were protesting about the enclosure of common land.
The station was however featured, along with Weybourne station on the North Norfolk railway, as the "Warmington-on-Sea" station in the popular BBC comedy series "Dad's Army".
Wymondham station is the junction for the Mid-Norfolk Railway, although their trains, running 11.5 miles north to Dereham operate from a small station closer to the town centre and the Abbey.

We do not yet have a station in the immediate neighbourhood of Wymondham Station, so the best option is a pleasant twenty-minute walk to Wymondham Abbey Station.
Turn left into Vicar Street, and Wymondham Abbey Station is on the right after about a quarter of a mile.

Wymondham's history can be traced back to Anglo-Saxon times, and there was once a Saxon church near the Abbey site.
Much of the medieval history of Wymondham centres around the life of the abbey and rivalry between the town and monks.
In the case of Wymondham, the fire of 1615 can be pinpointed to arson, started in a stable whilst many of the population were at church.

Development at Wymondham Abbey, Norfolk involving the building of changing rooms and a new visitor centre necessitated an archaeological evaluation.
Wymondham is considered to have been possibly the site of a pre-conquest minster church and this status perhaps warranted a masonry church.
Other burials were found which belong to either of the two pre AD1107 phases of church building although many of these were truncated by the construction of the Norman Abbey north cloister walkway which was considerably lower than the floor level of the south aisle.

I was lucky enough to visit the Abbey in 1990 and see a beautiful plaque in his honor.
Most of our guests had not visited the Abbey before, & all commented on the beautiful building as well as the service itself The music was excellent (Thank you Choir & Howard Thomas), & I cannot thank you enough for making our day so special, with God at its centre.
We visited the abbey today, and fond memories came flooding back, its the most beautiful place to get married in, and holds lots of special memmories for us.

Soon after it was built, Wymondham was placed under the care of St. Alban's Abbey as a Priory, and only became an Abbey in its own right in 1448, less than a century before it was dissolved by King Henry VIII.
Although a great deal of the Abbey has disappeared, there is still much to see inside.
Wymondham today is a family church, and it's dedicated congregation do a marvelous job in maintaining its beauty.

Gig in the park 2000 proved to be a massive hit with the Wymondham community with nearly 500 people braving the wet weather to see local bands performing.
Wymondham Fire staion has been busy this week with several fires including a coach which caught fire on the A11 where 50 people had to be evacuated when a blaze broke out as the coach returned to Aylsham at about 7.20pm.
And later in the week an elderly woman was rescued from her bedroom at 2am.

 Kett's Rebellion 1549
In Wymondham, in July, people took the law into their own hands and started tearing down enclosers’ fences.
On 7th December, William was hung, with bitter irony, from Wymondham Abbey, and Robert from Norwich Castle, in chains.
In 1999, Norfolk people celebrated the 450th anniversary of Kett’s Rebellion, with a moving free play in parks and schools, a festival in the Ketts’ home-town of Wymondham, a commemorative ale brewed by Norfolk’s Woodforde’s Brewery and the honour of commemoration in the 1999 logo of the annual CAMRA Norwich Beer Festival.
