Hollins University's new Wyndham Robertson Library opened to the public March 30, 1999 and was formally dedicated two weeks later as part of an entire weekend honoring the school's literary tradition.
The library is named for Wyndham Robertson, current chair of the Hollins University Board of Trustees and member of the class of 1958.
As we settle into our new space, the staff of the Wyndham Robertson Library would like to invite Virginia librarians to stop by for a visit on the way to the Homestead for VLA this October, or any time before or after.

Wyndham Robertson (1803-1888), the 20th governor of Virginia actively corresponded with southern generals during the civil war.
The letters are addressed to Wyndham and are largely from his family and are concerned with family affairs, although in the years before 1838 Wyndham was immersed in law and politics and after that date was concerned with several business ventures.
Wyndham Robertson was particularly proud of his descent from Pocahontas (he named one of his children Pocahontas, and another Powhatan).

Robertson was active in North Carolina textile manufacturing around Salisbury and Lexington, N.C., for many years, and served in various capacities with textile organizations, including as president of the North Carolina Cotton Manufacturers' Association in the 1950s.
Robertson married Blanche Spencer of Martinsville, Va., in 1931; the couple had three children: Julian, Jr., Blanche, and Wyndham.
The bulk of the materials relate to Robertson's interest in genealogy and include source materials and other items Robertson used in writing The Family of William and Elizabeth Bolling Robertson of Richmond, Virginia, 1585-1981 (1981, with James Samuel Patton) and The Story of Frederick Williams Robertson and Charlotte (Reynolds) Hackett Robertson (1969).

Col. ELIJAH ROBERTSON was one of the brothers of Gen. JAMES ROBERTSON, and married SARAH MACLIN, said to have been the daughter of WILLIAM MACLIN who came to Tennessee and thc Wautauga Valley.
The sons of CORNELIUS ROBERTSON also settled at INDEPENDENCE, and CLARISSA (HILL) ROBERTSON died and is buried there in the old cemetery, where this compiler copied her tombstone inscription about 1938, which recites that she died there, the relict of CORNELIUS ROBERTSON on FEBRUARY 5, 1864, aged 84 years and six months.

 Robertson family shows special appreciation for ‘third parent’
Summers he went with the Robertsons to Myrtle Beach, and there was that trip to California during World War II, when daddy Julian was in the Army at Banning, Calif., and wanted to see his family.
Old friends move from one to the other and chatted with Julian and his wife, Josie, and Blanche and her children, and Wyndham and each other, and admired the flowers and the balloons and the tables Clyde Overcash helped Wyndham arrange.
The Robertsons who no longer live in Salisbury had to get on the road, and Mary Jane was probably tired, and it was hot.

 Mlyn to direct Robertson Scholars Program at UNC, Duke
Robertson Scholars will spend much of their time on both campuses, including one semester in residence at the other university.
Mlyn, a UNC political scientist for a decade, was selected by a search committee chaired by Wyndham Robertson, Julian Robertson’s sister who is a former vice president for communications at the UNC General Administration and a member of the board of the Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke.
The first class of about 30 Robertson Scholars will be chosen this spring from the next pool of incoming freshmen at Duke and Carolina.

This weekend also marks the graduation of the first Robertson Scholars, students who studied at UNC and Duke University in a program that Robertson initiated and funded when two of his own sons were in college, one in Durham and one in Chapel Hill.
Robertson was a business major who graduated in 1955, making a lot of friends along the way but not devoting great interest in his studies, Dibbert said.
He and his sisters, Wyndham Robertson and Blanche Bacon, started the Blanche and Julian Robertson Family Foundation in Salisbury in honor of their parents.

Although not of Huguenot architecture or built on a Huguenot grant, this hotel was built in 1847 by a stock company including Huguenot descendants such as Archibald and Abraham Sallé Wooldridge and Wyndham Robertson, former governor of Virginia.
It was built as a health resort for the nearby sulphur and chalybeate springs.
Although social activities quickly resumed after the war, their time was short-lived, for the old hotel burned some time between September 1888 and August 1889.

 Woman power!  Greensboro gets a slam dunk
A member of the press' board of governors, she thought the press might interest Greensboro women, who in the past have endowed a professorship and scholarships at UNC-G to benefit the women's studies program there.
The press is a unit of the UNC system and serves all campuses; its women studies list is very strong.
So Robertson talked with her friend Cone, a book lover and tireless proponent of women's issues, who agreed to invite a group of about 25 prospects to lunch at her house.

Policy on the Reconciliation of Lost Materials between Fintel and Wyndham Robertson Libraries
The Fintel Library of Roanoke College and Wyndham Robertson Library of Hollins University successfully share a catalog and send materials to each others’ users via a courier service throughout the year.
Although the great majority of items are returned on time and with no damage by users of each institution, items from one institution are occasionally lost (or lost because damaged beyond the possibility of repair) by users of the other institution.
