Wyoming County is located in the U.S. state of West Virginia.
The county is bounded in the west by Mingo County, West Virginia, in the northwest by Logan County, West Virginia, in the north by Boone County, West Virginia, in the northeast by Raleigh County, West Virginia, in the southeast by Mercer County, West Virginia and in the south by McDowell County, West Virginia.
In the county, the population was spread out with 22.40% under the age of 18, 8.70% from 18 to 24, 27.50% from 25 to 44, 27.40% from 45 to 64, and 13.90% who were 65 years of age or older.

Wyoming County was created by the Virginia General Assembly on January 26, 1850 from the upper portion of Logan County.
On July 19, 1850, the County Court awarded contracts totaling $2,000 for the construction of three public buildings, a courthouse to be constructed by John Lambert, a jail, constructed by Mitchell Cooke, and a smaller brick building for storage and other community activities.
Wyoming County was represented at the Constitutional Convention by Captain William Walker Jr., who was assigned to the Committee on Education.

Raleigh County was created by an act of the Virginia General Assembly on January 23, 1850, from parts of Fayette County.

Twenty years of research leads to the conclusion that the same disciplines and tools were employed to create Ogam glyphs and Christian symbols (Chi-Rho) on rock faces in both southern West Virginia and southern Ireland.
In 1981, archaeologist Robert L. Pyle of Morgantown, West Virginia began exploring the mountains of southern part of the state studying petroglyphs (markings on stone) that at first glance resembled archaic runes and were different from traditional ancient American rock carvings.
(The petroglyphs in West Virginia and Kentucky exhibit what is known in Europe as "stem type Ogam.") The markings were considered in connection with the tradition of St. Brendan's voyages to this continent in the 6th century.
