Wyrd - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wyrd is a concept in ancient Anglo-saxon and Nordic cultures roughly corresponding to fate.
Wyrd therefore holds all things in a "weave" of action and reaction that has no room for true "original" action or thought; all things arise with Skuld or necessity and move inexorably towards their fate or destiny, woven by the Norns.
Wyrd was paralleled in early Nordic cultures where the word was rendered as urðr — also the name of the middle of the three Norns, who shape our lives out of the layers of the past, known as ørlög.

 Wyrd: The Role of Fate
Wyrd is an Old English noun, a feminine one, from the verb weorthan "to become".
Wyrd is the ancestor of the more modern weird, which before it meant odd or unusual in the pejorative sense carried connotations of the supernatural, as in Shakespeare's weird sisters, the trio of witches in MacBeth.
Wyrd is Fate or Destiny, but not the "inexorable fate" of the ancient Greeks.

 What is Wyrd?
In a metaphysical terms, wyrd embodies the concept that everything is turning into something else while both being drawn in toward and moving out from its own origins.
To the extent that my reaction is determined by these patterns, wyrd is shaping my life at that moment, and my reaction may feel to me as though it were predestined (if I want to deny responsibility) or the only "right" choice (if I want to claim responsibility for it).
The larger patterns of wyrd created by individuals in a particular time and place is the source of the zeitgeist (spirit of the age) which informs the beliefs and behaviour of everyone in a society.

 Introduction
In The Way of Wyrd, I tell the story of how an Anglo-Saxon young man is initiated into the secrets of this great tradition – a view from the ‘inside’ of how it feels to live in Wyrd.
When Wyrd was rediscovered, and revealed to a modern audience in The Way of Wyrd, it inspired people who ‘belonged’ to other religions, as well as those who were seekers outside of an organised religion.
The Way of Wyrd brings the wisdom of a wizard from the past to inspire your life today, and to take you on a journey to discovering the nature of your own soul.

 Approaching wyrd
I've been asked to write something about Wyrd, for this issue - on Wyrd, the eldest norn, or all norns, fate, destiny, Wyrd being the English form of the word which in Old Icelandic ('Old Norse') is Urðr, pronounced approximately 'Oo-rrth', with the 'oo' long, the rr rolled, and the 'th' as in 'then'.
The Anglo-Saxon noun wyrd is derived from a verb, weorðan, 'to become', which, in turn, is derived from an Indo-European root *uert- meaning 'to turn'… Wyrd literally means 'that which has turned' or 'that which has become'.
To work with wyrd is to experience a flow that moves through you, in which you are knowingly positioned within the woven tapestry.

My favorite scene, one of the funniest I have ever read, concerns the witches’; trip to the theatre; Granny has no understanding of theatre or drama, and her increasingly raucous reactions to the performance she sees is not to be missed.
From the attempts of the duke to wash the blood from his hands to the manipulations of the duchess to the performance of a drama in order to call out the murderous king for his treacherous deeds, this fictional cauldron is swimming with Shakespearean ingredients.
Wyrd Sisters continues the story of Granny Weatherwax, who we first met in the Discworld novel Equal Rites.

Wyrd Sisters is the sixth of the Discworld novels from Terry Pratchett, and a very strong addition it is. This is the 2nd of the books involving Granny Weatherwax (the first in the Witches series being Equal Rites), and she returns just as strong, acerbic, and funny as ever.
Wyrd Sisters starts a little slow in terms of humor, but ends very strong (kind of opposite to Equal Rites, so strong early but with a somewhat weak ending).
In Wyrd Sisters, the witches are forced to use magic in some very interesting ways, but Pratchett also provides better examples of Granny's most difficult magic, not using magic at all.

Everything has a wyrd of its own, which is part of the larger wyrd around it.
