Every Orkney guide rightly makes mention of Cubbie Roo's Castle in Wyre and goes on to explain that the name derives from Kolbein Hrúga, the twelfth century Norse chieftain who built it.
In the West Mainland of Orkney, kobvald raudr became Valdi Red, Watty Red or Walter Red, and one of the caves in which he lived can still be seen on the Brough o Birsay.
In Orkney Gunni sometimes took up residence in Gunnie's Geo, a cleft in the rocks in Rousay but sometimes he chose Gunyasilya, a cave on the Birsay coast.

The island of Wyre Lies close to Rousay at the eastern end of the Eynhallow Sound.
The Sagas record that in the mid 12th century, a famous Norwegian named Kolbein Hruga lived on Wyre, and that he built a stone castle as a stronghold for his family.
This is Cubbie Roo's castle, Cubbie Roo being a corruption of Kolbein Hruga.

Shortly after arriving in Orkney he was responsible for the construction of a stronghold on the island of Wyre around 1145.
Born in 1188, Bjarni was responsible for the relocation of the remains of the murdered Earl Rognvald from Caithness to their final resting place in the St Magnus Cathedral.
