X signed to Elektra in 1982 to release Under the Big Black Sun, which marked a slight departure from their trademark sound; While still fast and loud, the album's country leanings were evolving and its raw punk sound was channeling raw metal guitar power-chords.

The Average White Band : Benny & Us - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Benny and Us benefited both acts as AWB gave King camaraderie and skilled backing; King gave them a context -- something they needed at this point.
For the last track, the group does a remake of the AWB classic "Keepin' to Myself." Although King can't attain Gorrie's laid-back proficiency on the original, it's fun to hear Ferrone play on a track so identified with late drummer Robbie McIntosh, who had played with King.
Although Benny and Us wasn't a huge commercial success, fans of both King and AWB will be pleased with the work here.

I feel that the music of Kings X is a little better suited to a label like InsideOut now, since most of the Metal Blade artist roster has become very heavy stuff.
The great factor in a band like King’s X was their ability to all sing in such great harmony with each other.

Perhaps the highest compliment you can pay to Edward Norton is that his Oscar-nominated performance in American History X nearly convinces you that there is a shred of logic in the tenets of white supremacy.
If that statement doesn't horrify you, it should; Norton is so fully immersed in his role as a neo-Nazi skinhead that his character's eloquent defense of racism is disturbingly persuasive--at least on the surface.
The message of American History X is pretty simple: racism is bad, and joining a neo-Nazi gang is not going to solve any of your problems - becoming an English Literature teacher or a film actor would be much more constructive.

Musically, the band has never sounded more adventurous, referencing everyone from Kraftwerk ("Talk") to the Pogues ("Swallowed in the Sea"), all the while sweeping aside those Radiohead-lite comparisons to embrace a massive, moving sound that makes simplicity seem sublime.
I'm not denying that the band has talent for nicely-produced, tuneful pop-rock songs that are sometimes even ear-catching.
The thing is though, these guys are trying to turn basically every song into some kind of soul-stirring anthem, and that's simply never going to happen with such consistently lame, obvious, witless, and crassly-calculated lyrics about how they will "try to fix you" and how "you don't have to be alone".
