If the attacker has the edge in cavalry, then one corps is permitted to start deployed on the board within 6" of the edge of the board, and within 9" either side of the entry point used, with the rest of the force in road column behind that unit.
In both cases corps troops are promoted to the next level when the majority of the stands in their unit reach that level.
However corps are functional organisations, and it may be sensible for the units left behind in various boxes to be combined as a corps whose function is garrison duties.

If I were to give the confederates 4 command groups (the corps) and the union 2 (armies) that would be very unweildy from the union standpoint (issuing commands to six divisions at a time) it would also severly limit the staying power of the union forces.
I had toyed with using corps commanders to modify divisional commander performance but that would be a fairly static system and would remove the corps as an influence once the battle started and I think the Glasco system superior in that sense.
Players running corps now have some ability to act on their own and the quality of the corps commanders is represented.

He formed his Army of the James from these two Corps and prepared to move forward to Bermuda Hundred (basically a peninsula) and City Point to secure a supply base for Grant when he arrived on the scene.
In the end and after several smaller fights, Butler moved on Drewry's Bluff, had his right partially driven in by forces under Pierre Beauregard, and was forced to retreat to Bermuda Hundred and his fortifications.
Grant then sent for Smith and the XVIII Corps to fight at Cold Harbor, leaving one division each from the X and XVIII Corps to hold the Bermuda Hundred line.

Corps commanders and all cavalry commanders are never out of command.
A commander who is OOC of his next highest superior suffers a negative DRM when rolling for ME activation and may not be included as part of the superior formation's activation.
It seems to me that the system needed more of these kinds of "historical-operational" constraints as opposed to what might be termed "artificial" ones (systemic constraints such as having to activ ate commands at random).

Anyone reading those rules will note that our basing scheme is on the larger end of what is suggested to avoid figures being too cramped on their base, and allowing for more dramatic poses on bases.
All figures will be mounted individually on 20mm square bases for all foot models, and 20mm x 45-50mm for all cavalry.
