And X Plastaz are definitely not your average group.  After having released a few international singles, and having tracks featured on European-released compilations (including 'Global Hip Hop' and 'Rough Guide to African Rap'), they now release their first international album, entitled 'Maasai Hip Hop' which has been recorded in Tanzania and the Netherlands.
X Plastaz make conscious bongo flava, as opposed to the partying sub-genre of 'rap katuni' (meaning 'cartoon rap'), with lyrics dealing with issues such as drugs, unemployment, poverty and child abuse.The group from Arusha, a city in northern Tanzania, initially started out as a three-piece, with rappers Ruff-Nell, Gsan and Ziggy-Lah.

 * Dusted Reviews - X Plastaz *
The existence of the X Plastaz is fascinating even before you’ve heard the group: six Maasai emcees and singers from Northern Tanzania blending traditional Maasai a cappella chants, rhymes in Swahili and Haya, and an incredible amalgam of what they heard on the radio, from reggae to Hindi movie soundtracks.
Maasai Hip Hop is as much a compilation as it is a debut for the Arusha-based crew, because X Plastaz (rough name translation: “plasters which are put on the wounds of society”) have been making hits since 2001, with six Tanzanian No. 1’s included on this disc.
The X Plastaz sound is still at-times a work in progress, perhaps because P-Funk, the Tanzanian producer responsible for most of the tracks, was a bit overworked to fill the album.

There's no flashy Jerkins- or Neptunes-aided futuro-crunk here, but the luxuriant grooves and stealthy brass of Manu Dibango featuring MC Mell 'O''s "Senga Abele" are enveloping enough to make you forget what Pharrell looks like for an hour or so.
Likewise, the snake-charmer beats and polyphonic flow of X Plastaz's "Msimi Kwa Maimu" has never seen the backside of the durrrty South, yet it resonates with the same trunk-bumpin' stank-funk as Big Boi and the troops.

Tanzanians X Plastaz interestingly make use of influence from the Maasai tribe, a surprisingly functional mix of the contemporary and the extremely traditional.
Reggie Rockstone from Ghana doubles up the previous influences as he uses some funky Afro-beat loops à la Fela over which he raps in Twi in a bouncing style reminiscent of some early-'90s American (and British) acts like Das EFX.
