 MacAddict Forums / Xfree86 or Apple X11?
I've been using Apple's X11 (beta 2 and beta 3), which, from app info, is based on Xfree86 4.6.1, with OpenOffice 1.0.1 since February and no show stoppers here.
Updating Apple's X11 was dead simple, I can't remember the particulars (i.e.: if a restart was necessary or not).
I just learned that X11 is going to be built into Panther, so i think I'll get a little more acquainted with apple's x11.

 Jim's Web Nook Software x11-ssh-askpass
The appearance of x11-ssh-askpass is somewhat customizable using regular X11 resources.
Although the default look is quite nice, x11-ssh-askpass comes with several sample app-defaults files to demonstrate the extent of its customizability.
It's available in the X11 section of OpenBSD's anonymous CVS tree.

Mac OS X: Using Apple's X11 public beta with IDL
Apple has introduced its own port of the X Windows environment (X11) for Mac OS X. Apple's X11.app allows X11-based applications to run side-by-side with native Mac OS X applications on the same desktop, similar to using XDarwin with OroborOSX.
In Apple's X11 v0.1, the implementation of OpenGL causes IDL to crash when using hardware rendering.
The public beta of X11 for Mac OS X is available as a free download; the final version should be available later in 2003.

 Sao's Place - Fink & Apple's X11
Apple's X11 for Mac OS X is compatible, fast and fully integrated with Mac OS X. You can activate X11 applications directly from the Dock, double-click applications directly in the Finder.
But if you have a ~/.xinitrc file, Apple's X11.app start the X server and the applications you specified in your ~/.xinitrc file, and then stay in the background, giving you a better control of the hundreds of possible startup parameters.
X11 also comes with additional libraries that let applications easily draw user interfaces, i.e.

The macosxhints Forums - X11, XDarwin, Xfree86, XTools, etc...
In Panther, I prefer to use at the moment Apple's X11, my second choice would be to install xfree86-4-4.0-1 with Fink from the unstable branch.
so i need to decide between xdarwin and apple's x11 to use as my x windows system, right?
let's see if i got this right: i need xdarwin to run either apple's x11 or xfree86 (which are the same thing?), which in turn runs a desktop environment of my choice?

my life in plaid: Reasons I don't like X11.app
With Panther it's even worse; there's no planned support for bringing XDarwin into fink "because Panther already provides X11.app," and when I tried building it myself, something in the build setup made things break horribly (as in, critical files weren't put into the application bundle, and the startx script was rather mangled).
X11.app doesn't appear to have any facility for any communication between the clipboards; even the "Copy" command which is supposed to bring the X11 clipboard into OSX does nothing.
The XDarwin approach was the best for my needs: if you click on an X window from another app, just raise all X windows.

 XDarwin Forums
No, OSX has its own way of doing things with its windows which does not depend on X11 -it has its own Window Server -type process, but it's nothing to do with X11.
You are not running X11 on OSX unless you start up either XDarwin.app, or Apple's own X11.app (which is based originally on XDarwin.app).
It's based on top of an advanced graphics layer called Quartz (Extreme).

FAQ of Install xfig on Windows
Xfig installs and uses an app-defaults file /etc/X11/app-defaults/Fig, while it looks for this file from /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults.
After xfig starts, it complains this message: Either you have a very old app-defaults file installed (Fig), or there is none installed at all.
If you downloaded xfig 3.2.4 between Dec.24, 2002 and Jan. 5, 2003, you were downloading a version without fig2dev.

Modified Oroborus for Mac OS X
Since XDarwin maps the command key to what would be the hyper or meta key on unix workstations, it would be a bad move for XDarwin (and also OroborOSX) to capture certain shortcuts since it would prevent the X11 app from making use of them.
XDarwin, by default, brings all X11 windows in front whenever it is the frontmost application.
If you have questions about X11, such as "what is XDarwin?", or "How do I forward X11 from a remote computer?", then you should read the Introduction to X11 on OS X.

I think the X11 standard generally use Apple Option key as a compose key for entering foreign and special characters, and so does the default setting in X11Beta3.
Can this also be used to swap cmd and ctrl keys in X11.app -> I hate that everything is the other way round in X11 applications.
This enabled the option key to work as the "meta" key in emacs, as it is supposed to.

 Forwarding Address: OS X: Scribus
I doubt Scribus could support Apple Events at this point, because it doesn't build natively on OS X. It's a Qt application, so it should build, but there are a lot of X11 dependencies in the code (I've tried and tried to get it to build).
I think the Scribus team has done an incredible job in bringing this app from nothing to a very robust tool in just a few years, and they are also extremely helpful, supportive, and responsive.
Continuing on my open source rampage, I wanted to make sure to mention Scribus, a desktop publishing app that has been in development for a few years but seems to be really hitting its stride this fall.

Re: Re[2]: Modal: application versus hierarchy
App modal means that everything except the modal dialog should be disabled.
The help dialog is separate enough from the rest of an application's logic that not only does it make sense from a users point of view to never disable it but it also makes sense from a programmer's point of view.
None of MSW, GTK, Mac, X11, or Cocoa require that a modal event loop be used for a parent-modal dialog.
