  X2: X-Men United (2003): Reviews
Visually, X2 is a sight to behold, with impressive special effects and a dynamic sense of place.
Singer's approach to X2 is very much of the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" school, resulting in a movie that, even at its best -- a thrilling jailbreak scene that's the closest thing in either X movie to a rousing set piece -- seems tame and unmemorable.
All the same, X2 and recent action adventures like it constitute a mutation in their own right: fast-paced, slow-witted movies in which the impact is the message; impersonal movies that deny any need for characterization; disjointed movies that make no apologies -- and pay no penalties -- for making no sense.

X2 (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
X2 is an action movie, first released in the United Kingdom on April 24, 2003, and in the United States on May 2, 2003.
In the film, his military background is moved to the foreground, and the religious aspect of the character is eliminated.
In the film, Jason is mute, lobotomized and wheelchair-bound; his brain secretes a powerful chemical which is extracted through a tap in his spine and used by his father as a mind control agent on Nightcrawler, Deathstrike, Magneto and Cyclops.

 X2 - WIDESCREEN DVD
Where the first film opened with a Holocaust backstory, the second instalment begins in the White House with a quote from Abraham Lincoln's inaugural address and a cool doubling of Aaron Shikler's pensive portrait of John F. Kennedy.
The highlight of the film comes early in a frankly stunning action set-piece that follows Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming) as he infiltrates the White House; the rest of the action scenes are either routine or, in one bizarre sequence, borrowed almost in their entirety from Firestarter.
X2 is probably best appreciated, like its predecessor, as a canny satire of the United States' inability to live up to the standard of acceptance established by its doctrine.

 Why X2 was Nifty-Keen
X2 builds a very nice structure on that foundation, and does expand the cast and the concept to good effect.
X2 provides some insight into how mutants are perceived by normal people--but, again, that only is possible because of the work done in the first movie.
X2 is that rarest of beasts, an intelligent action film, one that doesn't skimp on thrills, spills, and excitement, but which will keep you intellectually engaged with issues to think about, give you characters about whose fate you genuinely care, and leaves you wanting more without feeling like you've been cheated.

Filmtracks: X2: X-Men United (John Ottman)
X2: X-Men United: (John Ottman) The first X-Men film was blockbuster of immense proportions, drawing in over $300 million for Fox worldwide and leading to a series of other comic-to-screen adaptations.
For the sequel, Fox decided to set a record by globally releasing the film on the same date in 93 nations, saturating the market with nearly 9,000 prints of the film.
A piano performance of a secondary theme in the suite track hints that Ottman was headed in the right direction to diversify the score, and perhaps a somewhat over-dampened recording hindered the orchestral sections (and the strings in particular) from expressing the vibrant power that the score probably possessed before mixing.

This film is also hugely entertaining and, like the first, is accessible even to those moviegoers not familiar with the X-Men and their vast and complex history.
Light film grain is visible throughout the presentation, with accurate (if muted) color and very deep fls.
Finally, there are three theatrical trailers for the film, as well as an anti-drug PSA (which doesn't seem to have any connection to the film, nor any reason for being on this disc that I can determine).

X2 (X-Men United) is here with a better story, more characters, fantastic action scenes, a pulsating score, and enough material that will have you salivating for a continuation in the blockbuster franchise.
While his visionary aspects to the film are impressive due to its location, the story itself is jaded with so many plot holes, comprehension is lost.
While some may find the film off-putting like the other TV reality shows, the film itself is quite appealing and funny and should make a boatload of money from individuals who want to venture into someone else’s world.

X2 leaves a trail of hints and unresolved subplots on the road to the imminent X3.
I find it amusing that Ottman also edited this film, because the editing is also one of the film's weak spots.
You have to wonder, though, with the film using him as the butt of many jokes, if he ever stopped being a circus act in the eyes of the filmmakers.

 Orlando Weekly - Film Review - X2: X-Men United
Beclawed misanthrope Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) is on a lonely quest to discover his long-suppressed origins; meanwhile, the combustible distrust between his fellow mutants and the human race is threatening to explode, thanks to the terrorist activities of a new player: a blue-skinned, vaguely demonic teleporter named Nightcrawler (Alan Cumming, barely recognizable).
In fact, the greatest achievement of "X2" may be the sheer finesse with which it juggles a mammoth one dozen major roles.
Befitting the "Empire" connection, "X2" is a remarkably somber piece of work, given to long stretches of emotional interchange that make the carefully doled out action sequences alight with even greater impact.

X2 - Music from the Movies
When Bryan Singer directed the first X-Men film a couple of years ago, fans of composer John Ottman had their biggest disappointment of the year when he was not able to score the film, being too busy with his own directing project, Urban Legends 2.
X2 goes in the opposite direction, doing exactly what we expect but in a very proud way, with large orchestral and choral forces, basically without any electronics at all.
This is one for both fans of the film and film music in general.

It's amazing that in just two films we already have a real appreciation for the relationships between such a considerable group of characters, and it is for the continued development of these relationships - and not the cool story line and action sequences - that makes me look forward to another X-film.
Iceman stood out for me, bringing an uncomfortable Backstreet Boy vibe to the role, and although his role in X2 is small, James Marsden just doesn't seem to have it in him to hold a commanding and authoritative position among the X-sters as Cyclops.
In the first X-film he managed to at least stand beside the Wolverine with some great gags, but he's been left in the gutter for X2, and in the single scene toward the end of the film where Marsden is allowed to genuinely act, his emotional response feels awkward and forced.

Wolverine and Rogue are back, and though the first film seemed to be built around their stories, this time the story line seems a bit more evenly distributed.

The one flaw that the film may have is that it doesn’t spend so much time on certain characters when the film is about the group.
Director Singer feels more relaxed with this film as he is able to just have fun with the story and keep true fans happy with the subplots as they know where each character is headed.
Aside from the lack of concentration on some characters, “X2” is a fantastic sequel filled kinetic action scenes and a thirst for the next chapter in the series.

X2 is the kind of movie that that most (including myself) watch in a slack jawed stupor, shoveling popcorn into our mouths, slobbering into our sodas.

 Political Film Society - X2: X-Men United
The conflict among mutants is suppressed for most of X2 because they are threatened by General William Stryker (played by Brian Cox), now retired, who is bent on eliminating mutants from the planet; his son is a mutant whom he has disowned.
When the threat is over, the previous quarrel among mutants resumes, just as onetime U.S. allies Saddam Hussein and the Taliban became characterized as monsters after they were left alone to carry out their own agendas.
The many obvious analogies in the movie, which serve as agents of political socialization, prompt the Political Film Society to nominate X2: X-Men United (which mistakenly is not called X-People United) as best film on human rights and best film on peace for the year 2003.

MD: One of the best things about the X-Men films is that, while they have their roots in the original comics, they have evolved just enough from the source material that we could still surprise fans in the audience - in a good way, of course.

"X2" spends less time establishing characters and leads the movie into a quickly developed plot and an overabundance of subplots.
Like its predecessor, "X2" focuses on the isolation and segregation among mutants and humans.
And while many of the kinks from the first film were not perfected in the sequel, they are subtle enough to be overlooked.
