Fedora Core for x86_64 Release FAQ
The x86_64 port of Fedora Core 2 is now a tier 1 architecture, and the x86_64 release for Core 2 was concurrent with i386.
As x86_64 is a relatively new platform, many of the repositories available do not have a tree for x86_64 64bit 3rd party apps and utilities.
The x86_64 builds of most of i fedora.us against FC2 are available from the x86_64 Extras repository and I am working on filling in what is not already there.

LinuxQuestions.org - AMD64 (x86_64) and Flash - where Linux users come for help
For the AMD64 (x86_64) users out there wanting Flash (Macromedia refuse to release a 64bit Flash Player), checkout http://gplflash.sourceforge.net/ to get it working with their 64bit browser.
I found a random xmms rpm on the web (I already had x86_64 xmms installed but that didn't satisfy the dependency) for i386 and installed that, and it worked fine.
So, I ended up with a 32 bit firefox on x86_64 fedora that can play flash and real and quicktime and just about any other streaming format fine, and a 32 bit mplayer also.

www.centos.org - News - CentOS Announcements - Centos 3.4 x86_64 Officially Released   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
As CentOS 3.4 x86_64 is built from the same source as CentOS 3.4 (i386) we are not duplicating the torrent tracker to provide identical copies of discs with different names.
However at some point in the near future the centos-release rpm for 3.4 x86_64 will be added to the 3.3 x86_64 tree and this will force automatic upgrades when using yum.
We will try to maintain security updates for CentOS 3.3 x86_64 for as long as there are no issues that mean they cant be used (eg 3.4 x86_64 specific dependency issue) -- but as soon as that happens we will have to close the CentOS 3.3 x86_64 tree.

I noticed that in the available package updates more than a few packages had installed both i386 and x86_64 flavors of the same package which led me to a few questions.
The x86_64 binaires in the RPM considered superceding the x86 ones and is why they are not loaded?
Its basically only there for apps that have not been ported to x86_64 yet, its basically using the libraries to give the 32bit apps the 32bit environment they need to work.

Greetings - I'm interested in porting Wine to run in native x86_64 mode, and was wondering if anyone had attempted to do such a thing already?
I notice that there does not appear to be any support in CVS to do this, but figured that perhaps someone else is already undertaking such an effort.
I've got software development experience, but none porting code from a 32bit architecture to a 64bit one.

The /lib64 will look like a historical artifact a few years from now, yes, but only developers (actually only a subset of developers) will be exposed to it.
Your example of a 32 bit program fitting in physical memory, while the 64 bit version not fitting, is exceedingly unlikely.
This is really good news, congratulations to the x86_64 team for completing the port.

Parsing as long is okay on ix86, but on x86_64 (AMD64) this leads to segfault as long is 64-bit.
The additional conversion through might not be needed, but I don't see way how to specify unsigned 32-bit integer in PyArg_ParseTuple.
