The record indicates that incumbents that provide their own xDSL services on the same line that they are providing analog voice service are utilizing the single copper pair in the same manner as if the incumbent's voice service shared the line with a competitive carrier's data service.
Specifically, after the xDSL traffic has passed though the splitter and into the output copper wire pair, it may be routed to a competitive carrier's DSLAM collocated in the incumbent's central office.
Where incumbent LECs provide shared-loop xDSL services to their voice customers, either through their own subsidiaries or in cooperation with an unaffiliated ISP, the incumbent must resolve many of the same problems that they claim stand in the way of providing competitors with access to the high frequency portion of the loop.

All too often not considered within the scope of xDSL simply because ISDN is the commonly used terminology and has been internationally in use for many years.
In most cases we are dealing with a legacy infrastructure and topology which, because of bridge taps, mis-matching and the general degradation of the electrical characteristics of the line, may not be capable of supporting DSL services efficiently.
In the xDSL world, the interference between nearby cables can have a negative impact on the performance of the affected cable(s).

xDSL is the name which as been coined for the family of digital subscriber line technologies ranging from ADSL to SDSL.
However, an xDSL access network will be an overlay network and therefore will not require the expensive and time-consuming switch upgrades that held ISDN back for so long.
All major xDSL vendors belong to the ADSL Forum and set aside their differences while working together to create system guidelines and market positions.

 IPv6 over xDSL
If the xDSL modem is operated in the bridge mode, the IP packets have to be encapsulated in PPP and PPPoE for the transmission between PC and BB-RAR.
When examining the xDSL modem we have to distinguish whether the modem is operated in the bridge mode or the router mode.
This is due to the required adaptation of the xDSL modem as well as the present draft status of the IPv6 realisation of DCHP.

 Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)
xDSL is drawing significant attention from implementers and service providers because it promises to deliver high-bandwidth data rates to dispersed locations with relatively small changes to the existing telco infrastructure.
xDSL services are dedicated, point-to-point, public network access over twisted-pair copper wire on the local loop ("last mile") between a network service provider (NSP's) central office and the customer site, or on local loops created either intra-building or intra-campus.
Currently the primary focus in xDSL is the development and deployment of ADSL and VDSL technologies and architectures.

Aware, Inc. - Glossary of DSL-Related Terms   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
In xDSL and in most dial up modem communications, asynchronous communications are often found in Internet access and remote office applications.
Typically, in xDSL, latency refers to the delay in time between the sending of a unit of data at one end of a connection, until the receipt of that unit at the destination.
DSL (xDSL), where "x" represents the type of technology, is a point to point network that allows the existence of more than one transmission over standard twisted pair copper wire.

What is xDSL? - A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary
They are sometimes referred to as last-mile technologies because they are used only for connections from a telephone switching station to a home or office, not between switching stations.
xDSL is similar to ISDN inasmuch as both operate over existing copper telephone lines (POTS) and both require the short runs to a central telephone office (usually less than 20,000 feet).
However, xDSL offers much higher speeds - up to 32 Mbps for upstream traffic, and from 32 Kbps to over 1 Mbps for downstream traffic.

xDSL TECHNOLOGY   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
xDSL is a modem technology, enabling high-speed delivery of data, audio, and video in a digital form over the existing telephone infrastructure (copper twisted-pair phone lines called the local loop which connects the customer premises and the carrier’s central office).
RDSL is a rate adaptive xDSL technology, which means that it can work at different data rates depending on the length of the line and thus, it can overcome the distance limitations for xDSL to a certain extent.
In the future, as xDSL technologies are deployed in high volume, there will be a need for a new way to funnel data from the modems to the backbone.

xDSL is used to push high bit rates through copper wires that run from point A to point B. For most people, point A will be their home and point B will be the other end of the copper phone wire, that is the substation of the local phone company.
Because the other end of your xDSL connection has to be at the local phone company, the choice of which xDSL protocol your modem should support is made for you: whatever the local phone company dictates.

xDSL bypasses the CODECs at the central office by separating the xDSL signal and voice frequencies in a POTS splitter.
The voice signal is passed to a CODEC while the xDSL signal terminates in a DSLAM, the xDSL equivalent of a CODEC.
By simply placing xDSL modems at each end of the dry copper connection, a xDSL may be possible with little intervention from the perspective of the CO. However, this is a risky method of deploying xDSL, especially asymmetrical versions.

FAQ: ADSL, HDSL, VDSL, DSL-Lite - what is this all about?
Deployment of xDSL technologies is accelerating after a very slow and reluctant start by most telecom operators.
There is a cost associated with deploying xDSL but its very small compared with the cost of digging up the roads to install cable.
There are limits to the distance over which xDSL can be used, so that a home needs to be within a particular distance of the local exchange.

xDSL is a technology that allows high speed data transmission over existing copper cables that are already in place with most telephone companies, businesses and school campus grounds.
The most mature xDSL technology is high-bit-rate DSL (HDSL).
The combination of support for a symmetrical data flow and T1 throughput on a single line makes SDSL useful for applications like videoconferencing and some kinds of servers, where this distance reduction is not an issue.
