Topic: XF 87 Blackhawk

  F-87 Blackhawk
The Curtiss XF-87 Blackhawk was a high-altitude jet fighter, capable of seeking out and destroying enemy aircraft and ground targets in all weather (Specified in the military characteristics of 23 November 1945).
With smoke trailing from its two huge engine pods, the Curtiss XF-87 Blackhawk lumbered off the South Base runway for its maiden flight on March 5, 1948.
This gave way to the XF-87A Blackhawk, a modified XF-87 equipped with J-83 engines designed to operate at night and in inclement weather.

 Curtiss XP-87/XF-87 Blackhawk
The Curtiss XP-87 Blackhawk (Model 29A) was Curtiss's first (and only) pure-jet aircraft.
It was also the last aircraft to be produced by the Curtiss company, marking an ignominious end for a corporation which had been a household name in the annals of American aviation for so many years.
The Army ordered two prototypes under the designation XP-87 and the name Blackhawk was assigned.

 Curtiss-Wright
Curtiss-Wright failed to make the transition to design and production of jet aircraft, despite several attempts.
The final nail in the coffin was the choice of the Northrop F-89 Scorpion over the XF-87 Blackhawk; after the F-87 was cancelled 10 October 1948, Curtiss-Wright shut down its entire Aeroplane Division and sold the assets to North American Aviation.
The company concentrated on reciprocating engines and propeller production for civilian airliners.

 F-89
The successful flight of the Northrop experimental aircraft clinched the Air Force decision.
The XF-89 had won the All-Weather Fighter competition over the Navy's XF3D-1 Skyknight and the hapless Curtis XF-87 Blackhawk primarily because its conservative design had greater potential for development.
In November 1948, concurrent with Secretary of Defense James Forrestal's endorsement of the Air Force decision, Curtiss' 4-month old contract for 88 F-87 Blackhawks was cancelled.

For various reasons, they failed to achieve operational status.
Among the more interesting of these were the last fighter from Curtiss, the four-engined F-87 Blackhawk; the improbable,-looking XF-85 Goblin, designed to be carried in the belly of a B-36; the mixed-power, inverse taper-wing Republic XF-91; and the fast, capable, humpbacked North American F-107.
Two other revolutions in aircraft design, both quite as important as the development of the jet engine, were also going on, but their effects have somehow been generally overlooked because they were so much slower in coming to maturity.
