XF86 4.0   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
Please excuse the XF86 question but I strongly suspect that I'll get better answers here faster than through any other group.
It worked, but oddly, the same applications would sometimes run without problems, and sometimes be unable to allocate colormap entries for this or that color.
I built and installed XF86 4.0 successfully, but it exhibits the same odd, unrepeatable colormap problems.

Of course svgalib does not support all gfx cards, and therefore in some cases X may be a solution - but please do not use the argument "acceleration", because that's just plain wrong.

 persistent /etc for  xf86??
I copied KNOPPIX to a hdd and altered grub until it booted.
My only problem is that the grapics are "messy" (i think i need to alter the refresh rate), so I thought I'd install XF86.
I have a debian system on the same disc, so copied over the XF86Config-4 file to /etc/X11/, but of course, once i shutdown it dissapears leaving my XF86 to tell me all about its issues finding a config file.

 The 9533 PS/2e and Linux
Seems to be a little trickier for some to get the XF86 stuff to run.
Main pitfall: when the XF86 crashes your machine and you have to "Master Reset" (switch off) the file isn't written and the info is lost.
This is a rather trivial error and you will be able to read it after XF86 returns from the graphic mode - but if the error would have crashed the machine you have had no clue at all.

Microsuck Forums - Apparently no XF86 4.4 for Linux
Apparently, the XF86 team's new licence is incompatible with the GPL, so we cannot look forward to XF86 4.4 in Linux Distributions.
So we have Linux distributors who can't use XF86 4.4 and BSD distributors who won't want to.
The XF86 team gets their precious advertising clause and nobody uses their work.

 Xf86 Config, Changing Screen Resolution
I need to change the resolution to at least 1280x1024.
When I go to the XF86 config file and say open it up with gedit, it still says it is a 'read only' file, therefore I cannot add the "1280x1024" to the resolution modes.
I have tried the properties section of the file itself but it says since I am not the owner of the file, I cannot change or edit it.

I have a VM on my MacBook running Ubuntu; its X server is xorg, and it properly is capable of using the MacBook's full resolution (1280x800, I believe).
Does anybody have XF86 running on a MacBook at full resolution and might share their Monitors section (or whatever is necessary)?
Hmm, I think you missed my point -- x.org and Ubuntu work *fine*, but I'm trying to get an RHEL3 / XF86 VM to go 1280x800.

Be my guest, but don't expect me to think very highly of the project.
I assume this will be a non-issue once XF86 4.0 with loadable acceleration modules are out, then it's just a matter of just not using the mode setup code.
But again, I don't see why there would be a XF86_FBdev at all even then.
