XFree86 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
XFree86 consists of client libraries used to write X applications ("clients"), and an X server responsible for the display.
Versions of XFree86 up to and including some release candidates for 4.4.0 were under the MIT X11 license, a permissive non-copyleft free software license.
XFree86 4.4 was released in February 2004 with a change to the license [9]: the addition of an advertising clause, similar to that in the old version of the BSD license.

The XFree86 X server architecture was redesigned for the 4.0 release, and it includes among other things a loadable module system donated by Metro Link, Inc. The current XFree86 release is compatible with X11R6.6.
The XFree86 server is normally configured to recognize various special combinations of key presses that instruct the server to perform some action, rather than just sending the keypress event to a client application.
XFree86 was originally based on X386 1.2 by Thomas Roell, which was contributed to the then X Consortium's X11R5 distribution by SGCS.

XFree86 is a trademark of The XFree86 Project, Inc., a non-profit organization that provides X Window System servers (as well as some supporting materials) for several operating systems on PCs and other microcomputers.
Starting with the 3.3.2 release the XFree86 X servers are installed without the set-uid bit set, and a small wrapper program ``Xwrapper'' which is installed set-uid root is used to start the X server after checking the command line and environment.
The XFree86 project is not responsible for any of these; please send any inquiries about them to relevant newsgroups or, eventually, to their authors.

Re: Using more than 5 buttons in XFree86
The reason is that the mouse in the standard X hardware interface has a fixed limit of 5 buttons max, and the mouse driver in XFree86 3.3.6 only uses the standard X hardware interface.
In XFree86 4.0.x however, the mouse drivers are now using the Xinput extension an can have any numbers of buttons.
So you may want to check XFree86 4.0.1 (or 4.0.2 which should be released before the end of this year if all goes well).

README for Solaris XFree86 Video Drivers and Porting Kit (Source Edition)
The Source Edition of the Solaris XFree86 Video Drivers and Porting Kit is based on the freely redistributable open-source implementation of the X Window System published by The XFree86 Project, Inc. See http://www.xfree86.org for details.
The runtime environment for XFree86 drivers is defined as object files that resolve external function calls and variable references from the wrapper module and XFree86 drivers during runtime.
XFree86 Driver source code files remain unchanged - this is one of the goals of the porting kit: to avoid work on vendor dependent hardware code.

We've been supplying xfree86 for a while now, mainly for the poor ATi users that have non-free shit drivers that don't work with Xorg 6.8.
The XFree86 team has released XFree86 4.5.0, with their nice shit license and I think it's pretty much the same way as Xorg went.
I would like to have Xfree86 removed from the repositories if nobody thinks there is a use for it.
