Topic: XI Corps (ACW)

XI Corps (ACW) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The XI Corps (Eleventh Corps) was a corps of the Union Army during the American Civil War, best remembered for its humiliating defeats at the battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg in 1863.
During the Maryland Campaign, and during the fall of 1862, the XI Corps remained in northern Virginia, in front of Washington, D.C., occupying various outposts in the vicinity of Centreville.
At Gettysburg the corps was still under the command of Howard; the divisions were under Generals Francis C. Barlow, Steinwehr, and Schurz, and contained 26 regiments of infantry and 5 batteries of artillery.

 www.hyperbear.com: Essays - Army Organization
Since Union corps were smaller than Confederate corps, Union armies tended to be harder to manage (there were more officers to coordinate), but they also tended to be more flexible (the army's commander could move smaller chunks of the army).
However, the corps structure was so important that army commanders got around this by creating informal "wings" and placing a major general in charge of them.
Armies were essentially autonomous, reporting directly to a the head of a department (a section of the country overseen by a general), a general in charge of all the armies of the nation, or the president himself.

II Corps (ACW) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The units of the old II Corps were consolidated into two divisions, under Generals Francis C. Barlow and John Gibbon; the two divisions of the III Corps were transferred intact, and were numbered as the 3rd and 4th, with Generals David B. Birney and Gershom Mott in command.
The casualties of the corps in the various actions around Spotsylvania, from May 8 to May 19, aggregated 894 killed, 4,947 wounded, and 801 missing; total 6,642, or over one-third of the loss in the entire Army of the Potomac, including the IX Corps.
The corps recrossed the James River, and fought at Deep Bottom, July 26, and again on August 14; then, having returned to the lines around Petersburg, Barlow's and Birney's Divisions were engaged at Ream's Station, on August 25, a disastrous and unfortunate affair, in which it lost a large number of men captured.

Disliked and distrusted by their comrades in the Army of the Potomac, the men of the XI Corps would find their reputation further damaged by a twilight encounter with Stonewall Jackson's troops in the dark woods at Chancellorsville.
During the Antietam campaign, the XI Corps remained on guard in Washington, and by the time of the Battle of Fredericksburg, the XI Corps had been combined with the XII Corps into a Grand Division led by Maj. Gen.
Even though 16 of the XI Corps' 27 regiments had seen combat, they had fought in actions considered "minor" by the survivors of Antietam and Fredericksburg, and the corps was held in contempt.

When this is put together with he strange wanderings of most of XII Corps on July 2, it constitutes a case that Slocum might outshine even Sickles as the #1 goata on the Federal side at Gettysburg.
Given your points about how much ACW officers were bound by the "book," I would think you would agree that it was much more difficult for Slocum to violate the halt order than not.
He almost surely heard early on that Reynolds was down, and the Gettysburg line was, at best, a patchwork of Buford's cavalry and the I Corps, later the I and XI Corps.

Civil War Corps Badges - Wikimedia Commons
Corps badges were originally worn by Union soldiers on the top of their army forage cap (kepi), left side of the hat, or over their left breast.
The idea is attributed to Gen. Philip Kearny who ordered the men in his sew a two-inch square of red cloth on their hats to avoid confusion on the battlefield.
This idea was adopted by Gen. Joseph Hooker after he assumed command of the Army of the Potomac, so any soldier could be identified at a distance.
