		The Twelve Tables (Latin, Duodecim Tabulæ or Lex Duodecim Tabularum) were the ancient legislation that stood at the foundation of Roman law.
		According to traditional, probably semi-legendary history recorded in Livy, during the earliest period of the Roman Republic the laws were kept secret by the pontifices and other representatives of the patrician class, and were enforced with untoward severity, especially against the lower plebeian cass.
		The laws of the Twelve Tables are not a comprehensive statement of all law; they are a sequence of definitions of various private rights and procedures.

		The Twelve Tables (XII Tabulae; also Law of the Twelve Tables, Lex XII Tabularum) is the earliest known law code of Rome.
		The content of the Tables and the tone of later references to them both suggest a codification of previous case law (the typical verb is hortatory: "let it be"), which was given further authority by proclamation.
		The contents of the Tables may fruitfully be compared with this and other Mesopotamian codes, as well as with the Greek code preserved at Gortyn, both in detail and in aetiology, and also as to their relevance for later legal practice.
