Holdorf was drafted in 1967, became a vehicle mechanic, and served with a battery of 8-inch self-propelled howitzers in II Corps.
McDonald, a 2d lieutenant, arrived in Vietnam early in 1968, served in II Corps as an artillery forward observer for almost a year, then was evacuated to Japan with malaria.

Catchy gunship call signs were selected to provide unit cohesiveness and esprit de corps.
Although assigned to the 1st ACW at Hurlburt Field, they received their gunship training at Lockbourne in the AC-119 and deployed to Southeast Asia in late December for assignment to the 14th Special Operations Wing.

Corps badges were originally worn by Union soldiers on the top of their army forage cap (kepi), left side of the hat, or over their left breast.
The idea is attributed to Gen. Philip Kearny who ordered the men in his sew a two-inch square of red cloth on their hats to avoid confusion on the battlefield.
This idea was adopted by Gen. Joseph Hooker after he assumed command of the Army of the Potomac, so any soldier could be identified at a distance.

The Confederate order of battle is much simplified from reality; the force was made up of a hotchpotch of units with some corps being barely brigade sized.
In addition the Confederates score 5 points at the end of the Union 1830 turn for each Union Corps that has no unspent brigades on the table.

It's a really tiny corps, which was why it was given a combined exhaustion.
I recall from a discussion a while back and in the ACW Campaign that Bedford Forest's chaps as shock on linear stands.

VII Corps - formed in France in July 1915 and took part in the Battles of the Somme 1916.
XIV Corps - formed in France Jan 1916 and then moved to Italy in Nov.1917.

When I first started 25mm ACW, I mounted 3 figures on a 2.25" wide base, 4 stands per regiment.
For planning purposes, I decided to start by building US and CS corps for the second day of Gettysburg.
But the fourth US corps I build will be the XIV corps, and Longstreet's boys are required for Chickamauga.

This is definetly one of the reasons why they did not use so much breech-loading rifles during ACW.
And shooting 5 times faster DOES NOT mean you hit 5 times more enemies.
(At corps and army level the Prussian advantage is obvious because of their superior staff work.)
