19th century - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 19th century continued and expanded the industrial revolution which had its roots in the preceding century.
It was a century of widespread invention and discovery, and one in which social, cultural, and economic systems were heavily affected by science and technology and the business models built on them, such as a shift from independent artisans and craftspersons to wage laborers employed by large factories as the primary means of production.
It was the heyday of capitalism, but it was also the century in which the major opposing ideologies, socialism and communism, arose.

A number of outstanding composers were active in the 19th century, including Mykola Ovsianiko-Kulikovsky (1787-1846), whose Symphony no.21 was discovered in manuscript in the Odessa archives in 1949 by the violinist Goldstein.
It was given its premiere in 1809 at the inauguration of the Odessa theatre.
This group of composers gave Ukrainian music a considerable impetus; the advent of the Soviet regime, however, put an end to the musical activities of Stetsenko, Stepovy and Leontovych and caused the exile of F. Akimenko (1876-1945), Koshyts and Nestor Horodovenko, abruptly halting this development.

Nicholas is presented in the traditional way, as seen in Byzantine art from the twelfth century on: a very high forehead with stylized wrinkles, framed by a narrow wreath of white hair that continues along the sunken cheeks and ends in a rounded beard.
The Child's body is absorbed within the outline of his Mother's form, and its complicated posture with the upward and downward pressures of hand and foot reveals an unusual degree of dynamic force, in contrast with the quiet tenderness of Mother as she presses her Child to her breast and touches his cheek.

The nineteenth century in Russian art was a time of great changes and developments that led to the establishment of a truly Russian school of art.
Throughout the early part of the century, the conflict between classicism, idealism, and naturalism was clearly visible, and it was only toward the middle of the century that the realistic tendencies became dominant.
The late nineteenth century was the time of the Slavic (or Russian) Revival, a movement which grew out of the conflict between those who believed that Russia should define itself in Western terms and those who thought that a return to and rediscovery of Russian heritage was best for the nation.
